Earlier today the first functioning LEGO® Technic large-scale vehicle will be unveiled for the first time at the Grand Prix Formula 1 event in Monza, Italy. The life-size LEGO Technic Bugatti Chiron model is made using over 1,000,000 LEGO Technic elements and is powered exclusively by 2,304 LEGO Power Function motors and 4,032 Technic gear wheels. The 1.5 tonnes (over 3,300 pound) car can generate 5.3 horse power and an estimated torque of 92 Nm. The vehicle was test driven by Andy Wallace – former racing driver with multiple wins of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Daytona – and reached a little over 20km/h (12.4 mph). But to get to that point members of the LEGO Technic Design Team joined forces with the LEGO Engineers at Kladno to design and build a functioning life-size version of the Bugatti Chiron. The LEGO Group have sent over numerous assets, which chart the builds creation.
The team at Kladno are no strangers to creating LEGO big builds, having worked numerous other LEGO creations such as the Leicester Square stores Big Ben, the life-sized X-wing starfighter and the Tree of Creativity found in the LEGO House. But the LEGO Technic Bugatti Chiron is the first time has life-sized LEGO build has been created with functioning features. Almost all aspects of the build use LEGO Technic pieces, including a number of new elements, such has transparent Technic elements.
This isn’t just another large-scale version of a smaller LEGO set or a LEGO Big Build, this is a functioning, drivable vehicle made using Technic pieces and powered by over 2300 LEGO Power Function motors. These have been pieces together to create an ‘engine’ which powers a complex system of Technic gears and axels. As well as working rear lights and those unique Bugatti headlights.
Almost all aspects of the build have been created with LEGO Technic elements, that includes the seats, interior, steering wheel and the smooth curves of the cars outer ‘skin’. Those limited pieces which aren’t made from Technic have been borrowed from a real Bugatti Chiron.
Even some of the tools used to finish the LEGO Technic Bugatti Chiron, were made from Technic pieces. I’ve said in my recent reviews of the latest LEGO Technic sets, that Technic builds are mini engineering marvels. Their complex builds and gear systems are on par with the real world vehicles they are inspired by. It also shows that with a little bit of imagination and determination you can build anything with LEGO.
