As well as a popular range of playsets and buildable props, the LEGO® Marvel theme also offers something for younger LEGO fans with 4+ Spidey and his Amazing Friends sets. Next month a trio of new sets based on the animated series will be released. This particular set is the biggest to be released so in the Spidey theme and includes an impressive collection of characters. After taking a look at the Spidey Vs. Green Goblin and Spidey Driller Vehicle sets, here’s a closer look at the Team Spidey Web Spinner Headquarters set.

This isn’t the first time the Spidey gang’s base of operations has inspired a 4+ set. Previous sets have recreated the funky Mobile Headquarters and the expertly named Webquarters Hangout. It also looks quite similar to the Green Goblin Lighthouse. So there are a couple of smaller builds and a larger structure, which is crafted from two different sections. But the build begins with Ghost-Spider’s Glide Spinner. This uses one of the 4+ Starter Bricks, which is best described as the basic structure of a helicopter. But instead of a rotor blade, it features a pair of engines on the side of the craft.
Not only is Zola, a robot-like character in the Spidey and His Amazing Friends world, but he also pilots a mech-like suit. As this is a 4+ set, Zola’s extended body is quite basic but that’s why I love it. It’s just a pair of legs with some arms attached but it offers a great deal of playability. The Zola figure can be placed on the mech’s platform and there are even a couple of studs within the arms, allowing it to ‘hold’ a minifigure.
As mentioned, previous Spidey sets have offered a similar larger structure as a centre for the heroes to meet. The Web Spinner HQ is built from two separate sections. The first is the larger base which includes a small room flanked by two columns. Although this is the largest part of the set, its detail is still fairly basic. Even when the top part is added, it merely acts as a play area. It may not have any working play features but it does have some great printed pieces. These include a transparent panel, a 2×4 tile and another domed canopy featuring Spidey’s masked face. There’s also a new piece, which represents Team Spidey’s drone buddy Trace-e. The HQ showcases the three main characters’ skills such as Ghost-Spider’s musical talent, Miles’ artistic flare and Spidey’s scientific skills. So you’ll find a set of drums, an art studio and a lab.
The set features a great line-up of characters including all three main characters – Spidey, Miles and Ghost-Spider. They are all wearing suits which are called Web-Spinners in the TV show. They are upgraded versions of their normal outfits, which have been designed by Iron Man. The main difference to the normal suits is additional gold detailing. All of these minifigures have short legs, to match the younger versions of the characters in the show.
Joining Spidey and his amazing friends is Iron Man, the character is featured in the latest season of the show and is very similar to his MCU counterpart. The suit is tied to any particular version of the character but is a slightly simplified version of general Iron Man suits. It also uses the enclosed helmet which briefly replaced the flip-up visor version. I know people aren’t fans of this element, but it works well for the character in this set. As does the choice of villain, which is based on a Nazi-era scientist, which creates brain-washed assassins and transfers his conscience into a computer. Admittedly, that doesn’t seem particularly kid-friendly, but the Spidey version of Arnim Zola is a little more mischievous than malevolent. He’s still portrayed as an AI but is more robot-like. So standard minifigure legs and a torso are topped with a unique element to create Zola’s face. although not a minifigure, Zola is joined by Zola Bot. Just going back to Iron Man, under his helmet, the minifigure is giving off strong Steven Seagal-vibes
