The LEGO Ideas books are some of the original books from DK, which offered inspirational build ideas. Every few years they get updated with new models. Across the book’s 200 pages, seven fan builders have provided their excellent build skills to create all builds featured in the book. They all split into four chapters – Build Your World, Go Explore, Express Yourself and Awesome Adventures.
Each page includes a Building Brief, which gives a short outline of what you’ll be trying to build. There are no step-by-step instructions for any of the builds included in the book, instead, there some of the build techniques you could deploy in your own builds are highlighted.
Towards the end of the book, you’ll find interviews with each of the fan builders who have contributed to the book. As well as an overview of elements which are useful along with a breakdown of brick types. Finally, the book has a new addition in the form of an interview with LEGO Designers George Gilliatt and Lauren Cullen King. This offers a nice insight into how you can become a designer at the LEGO Group.
I know this sort of book can frustrate some people due to the lack of instructions, but it clearly states the book is an inspirational guide to help builders create models with their own LEGO bricks. The lack of physical bricks also makes the book less appealing to many. I would like to see these sorts of books include a bag of random parts, even if it was something like the Build a Duck polybag. Just to give it more of a connection to the heart of the LEGO brand – the LEGO brick.
The LEGO Ideas Book New Edition is published by DK Books and is available now from Amazon and selected book retailers. It will be published on September 27th in the US.
