Doctor Who has been a mainstay on British TV for nearly 60 years. Since its return in 2005, the rebooted series has seen its popularity expand across the world, especially in the US. The LEGO Group is no stranger to the world of Gallifrey, Time Lords and TARDIS. They first dabbled with Doctor Who in 2015 via a fan-created project on LEGO® Ideas. The result was the LEGO Ideas Doctor Who set featuring the TARDIS, its control console and 2 Doctors as well as some classic enemies.
This led to TT Games adding The Doctor to LEGO Dimensions, actually, that should be Doctors as all incarnations of The Doctor up to that point were available to play as in the game. This also saw two physical expansion packs released during the first year of the Toys-to-Life title. Since then the brick-built adventures of The Doctor have fallen silent.
On paper Doctor Who is perfectly suited to the world of LEGO bricks. It features years worth of content to draw from, including multiple heroes and an iconic cast of baddies to face off against. The largely family-friendly show includes the necessary conflict to add playability to sets and its wide-spanning audience could easily see both kid-friendly playsets and large-scale display sets inspired by the show. The reason we haven’t seen more from LEGO Doctor Who could be its seemingly limited appeal beyond the UK. But this could be about to change thanks to Disney.
It’s been announced that future series of Doctor Who including the upcoming 60th-anniversary specials and the next full series will air on Disney+ outside the UK and Ireland. These will see the show reach a massive new audience and possibly make Doctor Who a worthy enough IP to deserve a further range of LEGO sets. Just imagine – a Doctor Who Minifigure series, some of the Doctors and their assistants as BrickHeadz. Even a large-scale buildable Dalek or TARDIS. A full game based on TT Games would also be great fun, with the numerous characters and worlds perfectly suited to a TT Games-developed adventure. Would you like to see more Doctor Who LEGO sets or even an entirely new theme based on the iconic show?
