SOS: Save our Soles – New LEGO® SmartBricks promise to eliminate the agony of standing on a rogue LEGO brick
BILLUND, 1st April 2021: In news long-awaited by LEGO fans, the LEGO Group has today revealed its latest product innovation, SmartBricks. The new SmartBricks are able to sense incoming feet and propel the bricks out of the way before they are stood on, signalling relief for those the world over.
The new SmartBricks, which are identical in design to existing LEGO bricks, have been in development for three years by a specialist team of designers at the LEGO Group’s headquarters in Denmark. The team experimented with several technologies before settling on a final prototype that uses near-field technology embedded into the brick’s core. The technology can detect the downwards motion of feet from 20cm away to give the brick time to move out of the path.
A small range of the bricks are being piloted by a number of families globally to ensure consumer satisfaction.
Helle Hertz, who spearheaded the new design, says: “This is a breakthrough moment for us at the LEGO Group. Every year we hear from thousands of families who have fallen foul of a misplaced LEGO brick. The experience of standing on a brick can be haunting, so the team has dedicated themselves to finding a solution. We’ve tested about 20 different prototypes on the journey to solve this age-old problem and we can’t wait for families to experience the joy of SmartBricks for themselves.”
