LEGO Star Wars Mos Eisley Cantina Minifigures Review

One of the most impressive things about the recently released LEGO® Star Wars Mos Eisley Cantina set is the mass of Minifigures it includes. These include a mix of familiar faces and a few new ones, who make their very first appearance in a LEGO Star Wars set. Many of the new guys include some of the odd but now iconic looking creatures featured in the original Cantina scene from the very first Star Wars movie. To perfectly capture this unique looking bunch in Minifigure-form, a few new and recoloured elements have been deployed. So you’ve read my review of the Mos Eisley Cantina and now you can take a closer look at the many characters who inhabit it.

LEGO Star Wars Mos Eisley Cantina Minifigures Review

Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, C-3PO & R2-D2

Our first on-screen visit to Mos Eisley and it’s infamous Cantina is when Luke, Obi-wan and the two Droids arrive in their Landspeeder. So it’s to be expected they would be included in the set. All four characters have appeared in numerous sets before and their appearance here offers nothing unique. Luke is kitted out in his farmboy attire and Obi-wan in his Jedi robes, complete with the new hood element introduced in the last few years. I would have liked Ben to also feature a hairpiece, as he doesn’t wear the hood inside the Cantina. Threepio and Artoo may not be allowed inside the Cantina, but they are important enough to the scene. It’s hard to improve on the current versions of the Droids, but I do hope that one day, Artoo’s rear gets a little print detail.

Han Solo, Chewbacca & Greedo

We first meet the dynamic duo of Han Solo and Chewbacca in the Cantina, as Obi-wan sources passage off of Tatooine. Again both of these characters have appeared in many other sets and both use the most recently updated version of the characters, with Han’s new hairpiece and the updated version of Chewie’s body mould. There is certainly an improvement over the previous version of the Wookie, but he still looks a little odd, in my opinion. Where ever Solo is, Greedo’s not far behind and these characters along with the Cantina, are the source of a long-debated moment of Star Wars history. As the pair come face-to-face in the Cantina, over the years their encounter has controversially changed numerous times. Unlike Greedo who has appeared in past versions of the Cantina and the Rodian bounty hunter appearance in this set is identical to the one included in the much smaller 2018 Cantina set.

Figrin D’an & the Modal Nodes Band

As much as Droid racism, dismemberment and shoot-outs invoke memories of the Cantina, a jazzy tune played by the in-house band is just as iconic. This is played by a band of Bith musicians dubbed Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes. These guys all look the same so as expected their Minifigures are all the same as well. The only difference between them is the odd-looking instruments they play.

Wuher, Dr Evazan & Ponda Baba

As with a number of characters in the Cantina set, Wuher is intrinsically tied to the Cantina, and so, he’s appeared in past Cantina sets. His ugly mug is captured well in Minifigure form, with his two facial expressions seemingly portraying his increasingly annoyed demeanour. But for many Dr Evazan and his good chum, Ponda Baba are the most exciting addition to the set. Both make their Minifigure debut and both are great representations of their on screens counterparts. Evazan is obviously lacking his pig nose, but the resulting Minifigure still captures his inner beauty. Not sure I’m a fan of the hair used but is pretty close the what is seen on screen. But it’s his vocally challenged drinking partner who is the most interesting. Ponda is an Aqualish thug, who dabbles in spice smuggling, presumingly in order to fund his budding career in architectural design. To perfectly capture his look, a new head mould has been created.

Garindan, Kardue’sai’Malloc, Jawa, Kabe, Momaw Nadon & Hrchek Kal Fas

The rest of the Cantina’s patrons are a motley bunch of weird and wonders creatures from across the galaxy. Most are making their first appearance in Minifigure form using a mix of new elements and recoloured ones. Hrchek features a recoloured version of Bossk’s head. The rodent-like Kabe features a hair and ear combo, previously used in the Batman and Monster Fighter themes. The unique-looking Ithorian, Momaw uses the same headpiece as the Ithorian Jedi Master from set 75051 and the Jawa is exactly how past Jawas have looked. But there are two new to characters included, who both require new elements to capture their unique looks. The grinning Devaronian, Labria has a new honed head element and Imperial spy, Garindan has a special element to recreate the long-nosed look of the Kubaz informant. This is connected via the neck and pairs up nicely with a black version of the newish hood element.

Imperial Sandtroopers

Mos Eisley may seem a pretty lawless place, but there is still an Imperial presence as the Empire tracks down the misplaced Death Star places and a certain pair of Droids. Due to the dusty nature of the desert planet of Tatooine, the Stormtrooper garrison deployed there look a little different to OG counterparts. The harsh conditions are represented by dirt marks all over the armour and both Sandtroopers feature a special backpack. Each also features a rank indicating pauldron, with orange denoting a commander and the black, a sergeant. The print detail is great on the Sandtroopers, although I wonder how they keep the back of their armour, in particular, their helmets so clean?

Overall

Many of the characters included in the Mos Eisley Cantina set, only on screen for a few seconds but they add to the dangerous and lived-in feel of the Cantina in the movie and by extension to the LEGO set as well. Star Wars is adorned by fans across the generations so dearly, thanks to all the rough edges seen in the original films. The battered ships and lived-in environments were a result of the time the movies were filmed but add so much to the lore of the Star Wars galaxy and the same can be said about the characters found during the Cantina scene. Many were merely there to fill out the Cantina and offer something a little interesting to glance at amongst the story beats and have since become iconic. So to have some of them appear for the first time in the Cantina set is a big draw. There is a good balance between characters who have appeared in many other LEGO sets and those making their debut in this one. But they are only half of what the set offers overall, see more of the Cantina set in my review here.
