The book is set out in chapters focused on different groups of characters namely Superman & Friends, Superman’s Enemies, Heroes of Gotham City, Gotham City Rogues, Justice League and Their Allies plus Justice League Beware. Most of the pages are dedicated to a single character with opposite pages often featuring variants of the same character. This is actually one of the best things about the book as it’s pretty fun to see how varied the same characters can be. Each page is accompanied by a Vital Stats box, which includes information on which sets they are from and when they were released. Some minifigures also include additional snippets of information more focused on their LEGO or comic book connections.

As with many of the LEGO titles from DK Books, the Character Encyclopedia includes an exclusive Minifigure. Unlike some of the recent books from DK, the minifigure in this one is unique and not just a slightly different take on a character. Val-Zod is the second Kryptonian to take up the mantel of Superman of Earth-2 and is the foster brother of Kal-El. He has a similar outfit to the original Superman, but it’s largely blue and white with slight amounts of red trim. The colouring of the logo is different to the standard one used by OG Superman and Val-Zod also a white cape. There is an unfortunate break in the print detail on the legs. The blue section of the suit is printed into white legs and the edge below the curved mound is missing the print and it’s really obvious. It’s always nice to have a character making their first appearance in minifigure form.
