A Look At The New Pick A Brick Packaging

The LEGO Group is working towards its goal to become a more sustainable company, this has seen various changes taking place across the LEGO ecosystem. One big change is slowly being implemented in LEGO stores. For those with a local store, you’ll be familiar with the Pick a Brick wall and the Build a Minifigure tower. These allow you to grab a selection of loose elements or create unique and seasonal minifigures. Currently, both of these in-store services use plastic packaging, with the Pick a Brick wall using two different-sized plastic cups and the Build a Minifigure tower, blister packs. Both types of plastic packaging will be fazed out in favour of new cardboard packaging. This was trialled last year and is slowly being introduced into various LEGO stores. There will be three types of packaging, all with a similar design. Obviously, the new boxes are vastly different to cups and blister packs. They look more fun than the plastic packaging and filling them will be a different experience.

The larger red and blue coloured box measure 18.5cm by 9cm with a depth of 5.5cm approx. The medium green coloured box measures 9cm by 9cm with a depth of 5.5cm approx. The smallest yellow-coloured box which is for minifigures, measures 9cm by 9cm with a depth of 3.5cm approx. As there isn’t a LEGO store anywhere near Leicester, my experience with the Pick a Brick wall is very limited but I understand there is an art to maximising your haul by creativity slotting elements into the cup. I can only assume this sort of Tetris-level filling of a cup would be easier in a square container.

There are a few questions still to be clarified such as if the cardboard boxes are reused, will you still get a discount and can PaB cups continue to be reused beyond their exit from stores? Thanks to the AFOLET for providing access to the new packaging.

  1. I can see the BAM box being a problem with shoppers stuffing the boxes full to the brim, then the beleaguered LEGO staffer having to explain that it’s three figures and three accessories….
