Since the LEGO Group was founded in 1932, it has come a long way over the past 80 years. Beginning life as a small carpenter’s workshop in Billund before evolving into a modern, global enterprise that is now one of the world’s largest manufacturers of toys and most powerful brands. The LEGO® brick in its present form, was launched in 1958 and patented in the same year. Although the brick was inspired by a similar one from UK company Kiddicraft, LEGO founder Ole Kirk Christiansen, improved upon the design and added tubes inside the bricks to give them that all important ‘clutch’ power. Exactly 60 years ago to the day, at 13:58 Danish time, the patent for the LEGO brick was signed and you can see that patent certificate below. Today that moment in LEGO history is being celebrated by LEGO fans across the world. Happy Birthday to the LEGO brick, here’s to 60 more years of endless creativity.
