Here’s the second part of my look at some of the newly released promotional LEGO® Polybags. These are all inspired by original LEGO themes and offer little tasters of larger sets. They can be tricky to track down but they appear in supermarkets or are given away free through LEGO promotions. So availability is improving, and some polybags released this year are available from online retailer Brick-a-brac. I’ve split them into two groups, I’ve already taken a look at the sets inspired by licensed/entertainment brands. For the first 2024 LEGO Polybags hands-on round-up, here’s a look at the new City, Friends and Creator minisets. These polybags are still packaged in plastic bags, but future sets are expected to switch the paper-based packets.
30658: Mobile Music Trailer
Friends polybags fall into two categories, one is often a small playset and the others are buildable props, often flowers. This particular set is the latter and features one of the new Friends characters, Paisley. This version of the mini-doll character has appeared in a couple of previous Friends sets. The character’s love of music is shown through the buildable elements of the set, which is an odd music box trailer towed by a cycle. Along with the music trailer, the set also includes a small animal pen, which is home to a rabbit. Pieces: 56
30659: Flower Garden
As mentioned above the Friends polybags often feature buildable flowers and similar items. This set includes a small patch of garden, which is home to a trio of flowers. These aren’t as detailed as other buildable LEGO plants but are still fun. The patch of garden does feel a little crowded. As a bonus, the set features a watering can and one of the same butterflies featured in the amazing Friends Botanical Garden set. Pieces: 64
30663: Space Hoverbike
This year is officially the Year of LEGO Space, so it only seems right that one of the LEGO City polybags is space-themed. The polybag includes a small hover vehicle, which is a little disappointing but the minifigure more than makes up for it. The new LEGO City Space sets introduce several different coloured astronauts, in new LEGO Space-branded suits and and helmets. This set features the blue astronaut. It’s a shame it doesn’t include one of the new aliens. Pieces: 46
30664: Police Off-Road Buggy Car
The first LEGO City sets of 2024 see the return of the LEGO City Police and this polybag features one of the new police officers, who are sporting the fluorescent uniforms. Flashes of the bright element colour also appear on the simple off-road buggy. There’s also a unique printed tile, featuring a wanted poster. It’s a decent little set, which uses elements to great effect. Pieces: 35
30666: 3-in-1 Gift Animals
The modern day Creator 3-in-1 sets are known for their cute recreations of various animals. This polybags allows you to build an adorable tan coloured dog. The use of rocky plates for the ears are a great touch and give it some fur-like texture. Similar to other 3-in-1 sets, you can also go online to rebuild the dog into two different animals. Alternate builds include a chipmunk and a puppy, I think. It’s difficult to place exactly what these alternative creatures are. Pieces: 75
30667: Animal Birthday Party
Past Creator polybags have given us seasonal-themed builds including a handful of birthday-themed minibuilds. The latest of those is a duo of birthday-celebrating animals, which include a penguin and an elephant. Due to the size of the set, these are simple more stylised builds. The critter’s connection to age-related celebrations is the addition of hats and some Birthday gifts. Pieces: 72
30669: 3-in-1 Iconic Red Plane
Despite the ability to be rebuilt into two alternate models, this Red Plane is a very simple build. Despite that the elements used are quite interesting and I like that an effort has been made to include the 3-in-1 function. Alternate builds include a passenger jet and a speed boat. Pieces: 51
