LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 – 2012 Vs. 2021

Unlike any other LEGO® theme, LEGO Star Wars has a long tradition of revisiting past sets. As they are inspired by the same source material, it’s obvious that different iterations of a similar set will be compared. During my review of the new LEGO® Star Wars R2-D2 set, I couldn’t help compare it to the version released back in 2012. Both sets follow a similar design, but how do they actually compare to each other? Well, over the last 9 years there has been plenty of new elements introduced and new build techniques developed. There are numerous similarities and differences between both sets. Which you can check out some below.

Both sets stand at the same height of 31cm, but the new version is slightly wider, coming in at 19cm compared to 18cm. The biggest difference is the piece count. The newer Artoo includes 2314, which is 187 more elements than the 2012 version. These are evident in the upcoming sets of additional functions and features. The ability to deploy the central leg was activated by dropping it via a Technic pin. In the new set, it’s achieved within the motion of the entering traversal mode.

Many of the tools are similar, with a number of flip-out panels hiding Artoo’s gadgets. There are a couple of differences here most obvious is cutting disc on the 2012 set is missing on the updated one. The upcoming Artoo also features additional functions within the head section. As well as a vastly improved finish to the dome set 75308 includes a periscope and hidden lightsaber weapon, along with other visual differences, achieved with additional elements.

It’s obvious that since the original set was released back in 2012, the newest version costs a little more. Set 10225 had an RRP of £149.99/$179.99 which roughly works at around 7p/8.5p per piece. The upcoming 75308 set will cost £179.99/$199.99 with only a slight change in price per piece ratio. Finally, the original set was classed as an Ultimate Collectors Series set, the updated Artoo isn’t but it is part of the Adults Welcome 18+ line.

10225: R2-D2 has long retired but you can add the new version to your collection from May 1st, when it launches during the LEGO Star Wars May the 4th promotion. You can see more of the set in my review.
