76993: Sonic Vs Dr Eggman’s Death Egg Robot Review

Despite being added to LEGO® Kids Zone a number of weeks ago, today during the Sonic Central stream, a fifth LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog set was revealed by none other than Dr Eggman. When the LEGO® Ideas Sonic set was released, one of the biggest complaints was the design of Dr Robnik aka Eggman, something the reveal actually acknowledge. The brick-built character is no more in the new sets and as Eggman puts it, he’s now an incredibly handsome minifigure. See just how handsome he is in another LEGO Sonic set review and a closer look at Sonic Vs. Dr. Eggman’s Death Egg.

Sonic’s speedy movement is recreated with a new play feature dubbed the Speed Sphere. The Speed Sphere is made up of two transparent shells which are connected by two Technic pins. There’s enough room in the centre of the sphere for the Sonic minifigure to stand. The Speed Sphere can then be fired by placing it inside the launcher. Then slamming down on the handle which causes the launcher to propel the sphere. You can get Sonic speeding off quite far and in this set, there’s a small ramp which helps Sonic hit Eggman’s mech.

As well as the aforementioned ramp, other buildable elements include a spike strip and a device for keeping one of the animal critters trapped. For some reason, the dome section is actually connected to anything so just sits loosely in a gap. It feels like an odd design choice, but apart from that, the little build looks suitably like something Robotnik has designed.

The main part of the set is focused on Dr Eggman’s Death Egg Robot. This is inspired by the final boss fight in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. After reaching the Death Egg Zone and defeating Mecha Sonic, Robotnik plays his trump card and unleashes his Death Egg Robot. The LEGO version is pretty close to what was featured in the game. It features one arm with a stud-firing barrel and a little domed cockpit, which the new Dr Eggman minifigure can be seated. The Death Egg Robot also has an interesting hidden play feature. There’s a sort of backpack section, which is slotted into the rear of the robot. Hitting the front panel of the robot causes this section to dislodge and reveal a pair of trapped animals. This play feature can be activated by firing the Speed Sphere at the robot, although you have to hit it at just the right spot to make it work properly. The robot has various points of articulation, so you can get a few poses from it, but due to the bulky shape of the robot, it can be a little tricky to stand in certain ways.

The Sonic minifigure is the same as the one which is featured in the Sonic Speed Sphere set, it would have been nice to have another unique version of Sonic. Dr Eggman is a brand new style of minifigure, it uses the same long legs as the recent Avatar sets and combines them with a unique body element, which features Eggman’s body and head. Arms are also connected to the body piece. These are similar to the long arms used on the Avatar minifigures. There are three animal figures included in the set – Flicky, Tocky, and Pocky, these are either unique character elements or different colours compared to other sets. Finally, the set lacks a Badnik but does feature a buildable character called Cubot. This little yellow robot first appeared in Sonic Colors.

Overall

Despite the odd reveal for this set, I think it’s my favourite of the Sonic sets. The robot is a great build and the style of it closely matches the version seen in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. I also like that it features the hidden section of trapped critters. This is something the game does and being able to pop it out with the Speed Sphere is fun even if it can be tricky to do sometimes. I like the new Eggman figure, although the version in the Ideas set wasn’t that bad, the minifigure version does fit better with the overall style of the Sonic sets. Dr Eggman’s Death Egg Robot isn’t currently featured on LEGO.com but will launch with the other four LEGO Sonic sets on August 1st.
