76261: Spider-Man Final Battle Set Review

As the Avengers Endgame Final Battle set has shown us, there’s a benefit to having a set released long after the film was. LEGO® sets inspired by movies often walk a very fine line. In order to be released alongside movies as they hit cinemas, sets are often based on concept material. In the case of the Marvel films, they also have to keep key plot points under wraps. This can lead to some interesting sets, many of which have only minimal connections to their source material. That was certainly the case with the lone set released alongside, Spider-Man: No Way Home. Thankfully, the latest set to take inspiration from Spider-Man’s third MCU adventure is a lot more exciting and faithful to the film’s climactic battle. Here’s a closer look at the Spider-Man Final Battle set.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has done an impressive job of weaving together a connected world of stories and characters across multiple movies and TV shows. Thanks to Disney purchasing 20th Century Studios and having a renewed partnership with Sony, the MCU has slowly been incorporating other Marvel elements adjacent to the MCU. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Sony’s Marvel offerings suddenly became part of a multiverse, after Doctor Strange’s spell caused a massive incursion. This made 2002’s Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man part of the wider MCU and brought together Spider-Men and villains on Earth-199999. That moment has inspired this LEGO Marvel diorama.

To give thanks to the Avengers for reversing the Blip, the iconic Statue of Liberty is given a makeover to return it to its original bronze colouring and swap out the flame torch for Captain America’s Shield, becoming the Liberty Avenger. The makeover is still being worked on during No Way Home and is covered in scaffolding. The set features the landmark’s head and this isn’t the first time it’s head has appeared in LEGO form. The statue was previously featured in The LEGO Movie 2 set, Welcome to Apocalypseburg. The overall build is almost identical and I love that, there would be no need to redesign it just for the sake of it. There are a couple of slight changes so in the head, you’ll find the sandy hand of The Sandman and in the back of the head is a portal to the Sanctum Santorum. The head is mounted on a disc-shaped display base, which is similar to the base used for the Avengers Endgame Final Battle. The base also features scaffolding platforms, which surround the head. Combined, these create an interesting scene for the set’s impressive line-up of characters to inhabit. The minifigure can be mounted around the scene thanks to the use of a couple of curved transparent rods. These have a Technic

One of the big secrets from the conclusion of the Spider-Man MCU trilogy was the return of a number of legacy characters. Most of them are included in the set, although a couple are missing such as Flint Marko and Dr Conners. The set does includes all three of the live-action variants of the Spider-Man character. These include Tobey Maguire’s Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man from the original trilogy and from the short-lived Amazing Spider-Man films is Andrew Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man. They join the MCU’s Spider-Man. All three Spider-Man minifigures are wearing their relevant suits and have alternate heads representing the three actors. The Amazing Spider-Man films never inspired any sets and the original Spider-Man featured in the LEGO Studios sets making them both rather special versions of the character, even if they don’t seem that exciting.

As well as bringing together the three Spider-Man variants, the film also united some of their old foes. These include Doc Ock, Electro and the Green Goblin. Although they represent characters from older films, they have been given a visual update in No Way Home, making their minifigures unique. The print detail on the villains is very impressive, there’s even slight detail on the legs of Doc Ock and Electro. The villains also have additional elements to represent their powers. So Electro has yellow electric spark elements mounted on a backplate and smaller sparks clipped to his hands. Doc Ock has his iconic mechanical arms and Norman Osborn has his hoverboard.

Finally, the other three minifigures featured in the set represent MJ, Ned and Doctor Strange. Ned and MJ offer unique minifigures, and I’d say this is the better version of Ned. His ‘letter’ jacket looks better than the Plaid shirt version. MJ is a tricky character to recreate, although I quite like that her piecing quizzical stare is the same across all versions of her minifigure. Doctor Strange offers nothing unique as this version has appeared in a number of previous sets.

Overall

This is one of the best Spider-Man sets released so far and is up there with the Daily Bugle set. This is thanks to the set’s delayed release and no need for it to skirt around plot points or secret characters. It’s nice to have all three variants of Spider-Man but it’s the villains which offer the most impressive minifigures. I also like that the design of the Statue of Liberty head is the same as The LEGO Movie 2 set. The set may lack play features but it more than makes up for it through its displayable nature. I’m all for having to wait for sets based on films if it means they are as interesting as this set and the similar Avengers Endgame set.
