76208: The Goat Boat Set Review

In the world of Marvel, three is the magic number. So it’s quite surprising that of all the Marvel heroes, Thor is the first to get a fourth solo adventure. Later this year Thor: Love & Thunder will continue the wacky adventures of the God of Thunder and of course, there will also be a couple of LEGO® sets inspired by the film. One of those sets is the Goat Boat, a Viking Longboat pulled by two legendary goat gods. The set also includes an impressive 5 minifigures. The Goat Boat is briefly seen in the new trailer for the film but how much it will feature in the final film is unknown. Print off some pamphlets, call upon the power of the gods and get ready to take a tour of the cosmos on the Thor: Love & Thunder Goat Boat!

The longboat is drawn through the skies by legendary goats Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder, who are raised off the ground so kids can easily push the ship along as they play. The set includes 5 minifigures – Thor, Mighty Thor, Valkyrie, Korg and Gorr – and a host of weapons and accessories, including Thor’s Stormbreaker axe. A central cabin features an opening roof for access to extra play space inside. Authentic accessories – including a boat wrench, fire extinguisher, map of New Asgard, bottle and a sunstone crystal – further inspire imaginative play. When the day’s Super-Hero adventures are over, kids can display the ship in their room. The build is oddly split across 6 bags. I say oddly as the bags are stupendously oversized for how many elements they contain. Along with the numbered sets, there is also a loose plate and a small sheet of stickers, used to add detail to the boat and its goats.

Many LEGO fans will know how legendary goats are in the world of LEGO fandom. It’s all thanks to a goat figure being included in a single set back in 2011. Their rarity has made them much sought after, with fans desperate for their return. Once it was revealed this set was called The Goat Boat, expectations grew and disappointment ensued once it was confirmed they were brick-built creatures. I’d be the first to agree the LEGO goat must return but this isn’t the set for it to do so. For once a brick-built creature trumps an animal figure (if comparing it to the original goat model). The two legendary creatures are known as Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder – the Gods of Goats. They have the ability to travel between realms in the comics so the fact they are pulling an Asgardian Tours longboat would suggest they offer a similar service to Heimdall. Each goat is built in a similar way, with slight differences on the heads to incorporate different horns. Oddly, their faces use printed pieces but the detailing on their backs is a sticker. Their faces are super goofy looking, which would suggest their appearance in Love & Thunder will be played for laughs. After all, they are Goat Gods, who can travel through time and space, whilst pulling an interdimensional space boat. Both goats are connected to the front of the boat once its construction is complete.

With the Goat Gods built, the rest of the build is focused on the Asgardian Longboat. Marvel’s version of Thor is inspired by Norse legends so a Viking Longboat isn’t really out of place for a weather-based god from space. The longboat is built in sections and as you build it you don’t expect it to become as bulky as it gets. As a longboat, it has the classic ornate bow and stern. The bow features a simple design that mimics a creature of some sort. They feature a split between each half so the goat’s reins can be mounted as well as featuring a place to display the Thor’s Stormbreaker axe. The stern is a little more substantial, with layered angular plates helping to create a curve of sorts. A pair of snakeheads, often found in the NINJAGO sets, add a little detail to this section of the boat.

Once each half of the boat is partly constructed, they are joined together to create the unique elongated hull of the boat. At this point, it seems rather skinny, but a row of curved clipped plates perfectly recreate the low hull often associated with Viking boats. The hull is trimmed with a mixture of Dark Red flat plates and stickers. Along either side of the hull are a number of clips used to hold a series of round shields. These are iconic elements of Viking boats and add some interesting detail. However, they are achieved with stickers. A Minifigure shield is combined with a 2×2 round tile and it’s that tile upon which a sticker is placed. They are a little iffy to place nicely and should really have been printed pieces, as they certainly could be used elsewhere. A little bit of advice when applying the stickers, the grain of the wood surface of the shield runs vertically. This should allow the patterns to match up nicely.

On the deck of the boat is a small wooden cabin. Although this is not something normally associated with longboats, it nicely combines with the overall style of the boat. It’s also needed as the deck is missing the usual single mast sail. I like the simple way in which the two sides of the roof have been created to sit perfectly together and overlap. Inside the cabin are a couple of simple accessories including a map of New Asgard, a crystal stone, a small golden staff and a fire extinguisher. Not really in keeping with the old-world feel of the boat but I love that it’s there. It may be a goat-powered Viking Longboat but glad to see health and safety is observed no matter the realm.

Considering the size of the set, it features an impressive selection of minifigures. In fact, all of the main characters are present, which is more impressive considering there is a second set based on the film. Often, with multiple sets based on films, characters are split across sets meaning you’ll have to buy more than one set to get them all. Not the case here, this set alone will give you all of the Love & Thunder characters.

Thor’s minifigure has seen quite a few different variants and for Love & Thunder, he has an all-new look. That includes a new hairstyle for this version of the character, one previously used for Qui-Gon Jinn. Thor also sports a brighter blue outfit, which is trimmed with gold and silver detailing, it almost looks like the outfits worn by the Eternals Minifigures. This contrasts well with Thor’s red cap. Thor has two expressions, one normal and the other with Thunder-summoning eyes. After losing Mjölnir in Ragnarok, Thor continues to use the Stormbreaker axe. It’s had a design tweak compared to the version featured in the Endgame sets. Joining Thor is King Valkyrie. Now the leader of New Asgard, Valkyrie has a tweaked design. I much prefer her new hairpiece compared to previous versions. Her outfit also has a similar style to Thor’s older outfit, with a very detailed grey plate patterning across both the legs and torso of the character.

Another returning character is Korg. This fan-favourite rock monster has appeared in a couple of recent sets. The minifigure used the same head as the previous versions but has a new outfit. Including a furry collar piece and super detailed print on both the torso and legs. There’s also a goat-like creature on Korg’s belt buckle, which suggests Korg is the proprietor of the Asgardian Goat Boat Tours. One thing iffy with Korg is one of his expressions is partly covered by his rocky headwear.

There are also two brand new characters being introduced in Love & Thunder. Jane Foster or at least a variant of her is back but this time in the guise of Mighty Thor. With a similar set of powers to Thor, Mighty Thor is taken from the comic run in which Jane takes up the mantle of the God of Thunder and wields Mjölnir. Her appearance is very similar to classic Thor, with a similar outfit and the winged helmet. She also has the hammer element used for past versions of LEGO Thor. Her brief appearance in the teaser trailer suggests this is the same weapon once used by Thor but pieced back together. The final character is a bit of a mystery. Gorr the God Butcher is set to be played by Christian Slater but hasn’t been revealed in the trailer or marketing material so he can only be compared to his comic book appearance. There he is shown as a largely white figure sporting a hooded cloak. The minifigure seems to mostly follow a similar style minus the cape.

Review Round-up

The Goat Boat is the perfect inspiration for a LEGO set. Random enough to provide a decent sized set, as well as something different for the Marvel theme. I also like that the longboat is quite traditional, yes it’s being pulled by Goats but it hasn’t been jazzed up to seem more ‘spacey’ well apart from a few blue 1×1 tiles on the base of the boat. The brick-built goats certainly pair nicely with the overall scale of the boat. New larger goat figures would have been amazing but the ones it has are good enough. The spread of characters included are surprising, not because of who they are but because it gives us five main characters. This kind of makes the smaller Thor set a little irrelevant

For

+ Includes all main characters
+ Buildable goats suit the style of the set
+ Great base to MOC a Viking Boat

Against

– Stickers on goats
– Gorr needed a cloak
