75336: Inquisitor Transport Scythe Set Review

With each new piece of Star Wars storytelling, we are introducing new characters, locations and ships. The latest Star Wars Disney+ series certainly fills the quota on all three. Obi-Wan Kenobi has inspired a number of new LEGO® Star Wars sets including a new ship used by the Inquisitors. These Force-sensitive agents of the Dark Side serve the Empire under Vader in hunting down the Jedi. They feature heavily in the Disney+ series, which also features their Scythe transport craft. This acts as inspiration for the largest set based on the series. The set includes the Scythe ship and four minifigures characters. Let’s see what the set has to offer ahead of its release in August.

After the fall of the senate and the Jedi Order, the Empire gained a grip on the galaxy. But the Jedi posed a threat to their rule. The Emperor created the Inquisitorius Program. Force-sensitive younglings and former Jedi were turned to the Dark Side and used to hunt the last remaining Jedi, under the rule of Darth Vader. In Obi-Wan Kenobi, they play their largest role yet after first appearing in Rebels and Jedi: Fallen Order. In their pursuit of the Jedi, the Inquisitors travel the galaxy in the ship known as the Scythe.

The Star Wars universe is filled with iconic ships, although the Scythe is a new addition to the franchise, its unique shape makes for an imposing addition to the Imperial Fleet. If there’s one thing the Empire likes is consistency. Many of their ships and vehicles have similar traits, this is partly true for the Scythe as it has an appearance very similar to Krennac’s Imperial shuttle from Rogue One. The Scythe’s sloping shell is certainly crafted in a very interesting way, it’s no surprise that’s its LEGO Designer also created Krennac’s ship.

The build begins with the core of the ship, this uses a mix of System bricks and Technic elements. This inside area also features a small cockpit with plenty of room to seat three minifigures as well as space for a few more to stand. Once the core is complete, the uniquely shaped shell is added. This is achieved by separately built plates. These connect to the frame of the ship in unusual ways. Some are simply slotted into place with Technic pegs. Others are ‘held’ in position simply by resting them on an exposed pin and hook plates. It is a little tricky to set them in place but not through the difficulty of the build merely because it’s not an often-used technique. Another section I found a little awkward was the sloped section which makes up the front of the craft. It will only slot into place if the side sections are correctly angled. It really isn’t that frustrating to get right but could be difficult for younger builders. The interior can be easily accessed by folding open the side panels and a long canopy section, complete with a transparent red screen.

Once the main body of the ship is complete, it’s finished by a pair of fin wings. This can be positioned to fold up when landing and spread out at a downwards angle when in flight. Both positions vastly change the look of the ship. The wings are finished with a pair of bolt missile shooters. You can’t have a Star Wars ship without the possibility of accidentally firing a small plastic bolt across the room, never to be found again. The finished ship is a nice recreation of the one featured in the Disney+ series. However, on a whole, the set uses a little more creative license as the characters included don’t actually all meet each other.

The set includes four minifigures and they are all particularly interesting thanks to them all being unique. That includes unique versions of Obi-Wan and The Fifth Brother as well as the first appearances of The Grand Inquisitor and Reva, the Third Sister. Ben Kenobi, as he’s oddly named in this set, has a surprisingly varied wardrobe in the series. Towards the end of Part I, he wears an unusual blue tunic with a poncho. This combined with his new hairpiece results in one of my favourite takes on the legendary Jedi. It has an air of the Cal Kestis about it. The Fifth Brother appeared in the Rebels Captain Rex’s AT-TE set in 2016. The version here is very similar using the same helmet as before but now in black but it’s combined with a new piece of shoulder armour. The print detail on the body and his face has been updated. This version is mostly black and it suits the overall appearance of the character.

The Grand Inquisitor is an unusual-looking chap, but oddly this appearance is perfectly suited to the minifigure form, especially his much-discussed rounder head. The Grand Inquisitor has a great-looking piece of shoulder armour, I quite like how it has trimming around the neck which sits flush with the head. It nicely sits over the cape as well, which thankfully uses the softer material for the cape. Finally, Reva is a brand new character created for the series and is known as the Third Sister. She has a fairly muted outfit compared to the other Inquisitors, including a narrow cape. Although her armour is less obvious than it is with others, the character still includes it, but her minifigure doesn’t. Simple print detail of the arms would have easily rectified this, in place of an actual piece of armour. Reva also has a unique hairstyle, for her minifigure version, it’s use the hairpiece element which was first introduced with the Orcs in the Hobbit Attack of Lake-Town set and most recently it’s been used for Valkyrie in the Marvel sets. It does an OK job of matching her hairstyle but makes Reva look a little bald as well. All three Inquisitors have their unique dual-bladed Lightsabers. These can clip to the back of the shoulder armours of The Grand Inquisitor and the Fifth Brother. Unfortunately, there’s nowhere obvious on the ship to store the blade.

Review Round-up

The imposing and evil look of the Scythe has been nicely captured in this set. Although it has some unusual connection methods this adds to the overall experience of the build. It’s nice to have some of the new ships represented, especially the cool-looking ones. Overall, it’s a nicely balanced set actually, there are some Star Wars ships which are a little boring but have great minifigures. For this set, I’d say both the build and character included are on equal footing. That being said, there are a couple of tweaks to the minifigures, mostly Reva, which would make this set even better. The set launches on August 1st and can be pre-ordered now. Watch the full series of Obi-Wan Kenobi now on Disney+.
