Another of the new LEGO® Super Mario sets being released at the start of 2024, is the Penguin Family Adventure expansion. Like other sets in the upcoming wave, it’s not based on a particular moment or Mario game. Instead, it takes inspiration from the broader Mario franchise. However, there is a slight connection to the iconic Nintendo 64 Mario adventure. So grab those baby penguins and get ready to propel them off a cliff as I take a look at the Penguin Family Snow Adventure LEGO Super Mario Expansion Set.

Similar to the Toad’s Shop set, this isn’t based on an exact moment from the Mario games, instead it’s inspired by them. If it was to be connected to a certain game, then it would be Super Mario 64. During the game, players visit the snowy world of Cool, Cool Mountain and one of the star quests is to reunite a Penguin with her lost baby. Whether by accident or on purpose, it was possible to propel the lost penguin from a cliff, making these similar random side characters rather infamous. The set doesn’t really scream ‘Super Mario 64’ apart from its also a snowy area. It features an icy cave and a large ramp. Its play possibilities are minimal but it would pair nicely with some of the past expansion sets based on snowy moments from other Mario games.
There are three Action Bricks featured in the set, the ones connected to the Goomba and Baby Penguin offer coins when scanned. Due to the new sets and the functions they bring not being available when reviewing this set, the larger Penguin’s Action Brick doesn’t work. You can also pop an Interactive Figure on the sleigh and it registers as an icy surface and gives you a few extra coins.
The set features three buildable characters, including two infamous Super Mario 64 penguin family members. The baby penguin is featured as one of the characters in the third series of Character Packs. The version in this set is the same. But he’s joined by his much larger penguin mother. They both look similar to their in-game versions but have also been given a LEGO twist. A Goomba is also included but has been given a festive hat, which can be removed and replaced with a 2×2 plate to create a standard version.
The LEGO Super Mario Penguin Family Snow Adventure Expansion Set will be available alongside other new Mario sets from January 1st, 2024. In North America, the set will launch on December 1st, 2023.
