The LEGO® Super Mario will continue into 2024 with several new sets and the smallest of those feature a pair of Mario’s most loyal companions. In place of the Power-Up Suit sets, we are treated to a set which offers a little more building and two buildable characters. Here’s a brief look at Yoshis’ Egg-cellent Forest Expansion Set.

One of the key changes to the new LEGO Super Mario sets is the inclusion of physical instructions. It may seem like a small change, but I prefer building sets this way. The digital build steps are useful but they can be cumbersome especially with the Mario sets which drop in extra videos, showing the set in action. But onto the set, it’s a very small and basic build, so much so it almost feels like it could be a polybag. A couple of the island plates, often used in Mario expansion sets are used as a base for a tree. The rounded canopy of the tree is just like it appears in the games. The larger of the two island plates also features a nest complete with a Yoshi Egg. This uses the standard egg element with added green spots. So simple but my favourite part of the whole set.
It wouldn’t be a Yoshi Forest with some of the cute little dinosaurs. The set features a pink Yoshi and a yellow Yoshi. Both have appeared in other sets but these were fairly large sets or a hard-to-find polybag. So this set is by far the cheapest way to get the two variant colours. The build of the Yoshis is identical to previous ones, although it used the newish 1×2 half-circle plate on the chest, instead of two 1×1 quarter tiles.
There is one Action Brick featured in the set and when scanned by any of the interactive figures, it bestows you with a Yoshi mount. When first scanned you’ll see a Yoshi egg appear on the figures screen and after a few shakes the egg hatched to reveal a dino buddy to join you on your LEGO Super Mario adventures.
The Yoshis’ Egg-cellent Forest Expansion Set will be available from January 1st, 2024. Please note this set does not include the LEGO Mario interactive figure.
