LEGO® City has been providing an interesting array of sets for a number of years. The theme is often a great route into LEGO building for many younger LEGO fans. This particular set is an interesting introduction to LEGO building, offering easy-to-build elements and unique Starter Bricks. The Construction Trucks and Wreaking Ball Crane set is one of the bigger 4+ sets and features a variety of vehicles and a wreckable wall. Here’s a look at the latest LEGO City 4+ set.

LEGO City sets have often had an unhealthy obsession with police and fire services. Obviously, these must be popular and sell well or they wouldn’t keep returning. Thankfully, over the last couple of years, the long-running theme has moved beyond arson and crime. In fact, the LEGO City 4+ I’m looking at today is only the second to not be themed around police and fire services. Instead, it nicely follows on from a 4+ set released last year and expands the simplified fleet of construction vehicles. The set includes three easy-to-build construction vehicles which all use unique Starter Bricks. Some of these have appeared in a couple of other sets, but there are also a couple of these special pieces which are such as the cockpit used to create the crane and a new brick which combines a 2×4 brick with a ‘friction’ clip.
There are three vehicles featured in the set, these include a dump truck, which uses that new element mentioned above. The dump truck appears the most simplistic of the three vehicles due to the number of exposed studs around the base section. The crane is my least favourite of the three, the concept is fun and plays into the set’s main feature. The ability to swap the wrecking ball with a digger bucket seems a little awkward. The star of the set is the huge, transporter truck. Although it’s super chunky it just looks fun and can hold the crane on the back. The Starter Bricks used as a base for all these vehicles are certainly unique although I can’t see them being useful elsewhere due to the connection with vehicles.
To help fill out the construction site and introduce extra play features, the set also features two pieces of scenery. These include an odd little barrier and a section of wall. The wall is an interesting build, as the door frame and surrounding bricks aren’t physically connected to the base. This obviously helps when knocking it down, but I could see kids getting a little frustrated but stacking them up as they can easily fall apart. Maybe jumper plates could have been used to offer some form of connection, whilst also allowing it to still be smashed to bits.
The set features four minifigures, all suitably ready for working on a construction site and all unique to this set. They include three construction workers and an architect. Although unique, they do use a variety of previously used torsos, legs and heads. One of the best things about the minifigures is the 2×3 printed tile accessory the architect holds. This represents the blueprints for another LEGO City set, the Apartment Building.
Overall
It’s quite obviously a fairly simple-looking set, but the larger size of the set does make it a little more detailed compared to some of the smaller 4+ sets. The various ‘starter bricks’ offer a great base to create each of the vehicles and although these are rather chunky, they work rather well for construction vehicles, especially the bigger transporter truck. All of the construction vehicles remind me a little of the old Tonka toys. The building is an odd little build, the ability to knock it down offers a fun play feature, but I think the various sections of it would have been connected together with jumper plates. This would help keep it together as well as still allow it to be destructible.
