LEGO® City is home to a number of vehicles commonly known as ‘Great Vehicles’. Each wave offers a different variety of sets inspired by real-world vehicles and found milling around cities. One such vehicle goes by various names – Garbage Truck, Rubbish Truck, Bin Lorry or in the case of this set Recycling Truck. This latest version is similar to previous sets but also includes a recycling point. So here’s a look at LEGO City set 60386: Recycling Truck.

The set is one of many which can be built by numerous people at the same time, with each bag having its own instruction booklet. One thing I did notice in the instructions was the required elements box-outs featured on each page show every element needed instead of a single image and ‘x2’ etc. Seems like a pointless change, unlike it has been done to bulk out the instructions. There’s also a small sticker sheet, which adds detail to both the truck and recycling area.
If the Recycling Truck looks familiar, that’s because the build is almost identical to a similar set from back in 2012. It’s built in 2 parts, the cab and base of the truck and the large container section which sits on the back of it. The cubic-angled screen perfectly recreates the large front of a rubbish truck. You can access the cab by removing the roof. Most of the detail is found on the container on the back of the truck. This can be raised to tip up and there is also a small platform at the very back of it. Here trash cans are placed on the platform and turning the handle causes them to empty into the truck.
The Recycling Point is my favourite part of the set. It’s built on one of the new 8×16 surface plates, so it can easily be connected to other LEGO City sets. The Recycling Point features a contained bin area with doors denoting what can be recycled in each bin. So one is for natural material, the other for paper and one for glass. Inside there are three different coloured bins. These can be a little tricky to remove.
There are 3 minifigures featured in the set including 2 refuse workers and a citizen. The 2 workers are fairly standard but do use the newish bright yellow colour for the torsos. It’s nice to see this new element colour being used on minifigures as well. The recycling citizen has a new torso which shows off her environmental credentials. Unfortunately, the small part of yellow skin around the neck area is washed out as the lighter yellow colouring just doesn’t print well on the darker blue surface. The set also includes a small white kitten, who doesn’t like a bonus animal element.
Overall
I know the truck is the focus of this set but I like the Recycling Point more. It just looks fun and is something which can be integrated into larger city scenes, especially has it uses one of the new surface plates featured in many of the recent LEGO City sets. The Recycling Truck perfectly recreates its real-life counterparts both in appearance and function.
