60374: Fire Command Truck Set Review

LEGO® City is famed for its rampage fires and so it has a pretty robust fire service. In order to tackle any sort of fire, tree-based cat emergencies or men falling into rivers, the LEGO City Fire Department has an impressive array of vehicles and contraptions. They obviously include quite a few fire engines, but sometimes you need a little more technologically advanced which is where this latest LEGO City set comes into play. The Fire Command Truck brings together a few new ideas to create an interesting addition to the 2023 LEGO City line-up. For my next LEGO City set review, I’ve taken a look at the LEGO City Fire Command Truck.

One of the nice things about getting to review LEGO sets is building something you wouldn’t normally be interested in. There are certain LEGO City sets which catch my eye, but I’m certainly not the target audience for most of the LEGO City sets. That is the case for this set, it’s something I had little interest in but after building it, I’m glad I got to check it out. As with many of the LEGO City sets released this year, it can be built by multiple people at the same time thanks to the inclusion of multiple instruction booklets. It’s also a set which can be built by the interactive ‘Build Together’ function of the LEGO Builder App. This splits the build process up in unique ways allowing the set to be completed as a team. I built the set in the good old fashion way, using the in-box instructions and on my lonesome.

The idea behind the set is that there are different types of fires and they are tackled in different ways. Not only by different equipment but also by different types of extinguishing material. This is what makes the set a little unusual compared to previous fire rescue sets. But before building the actual fire truck, there are a number of smaller sections to build. These include a woodland animal den. Home to a hare, this wooded area includes a simple tree, which can be felled once the area catches fire.

The second bit of buildable scenery is very different as it’s an electrical substation and a communication antenna. In a similar fashion to the tree, the antenna can topple over to reveal a fire. It’s actually a clever function and it works perfectly for the appearance of a communication station. In both cases, the fires are represented by the newish larger flame elements. These can be knocked out using some of the firing elements featured in the set.

The main focus of the set is the Fire Command Truck, which is a fire engine on steroids. It’s far biggest than normal fire engines found in LEGO City and there are a number of reasons why. Firstly, it can seat 2 firefighters, with one in the front driver’s seat and directly behind is a command seat, with access to an onboard computer system. There are 2 firefighters but they each specialise in a certain fire type. This is another reason why the set is quite large.

At the rear of the set, you’ll find 2 flip-up panels. One is blue and represents water, with the other being transparent opal to represent gas. Each panel hides similarly coloured bolt elements, these can be loaded into and fired from the spring-loaded cannon on the roof of the truck. A similar split of element colours is used as studs in the smaller stud shooters found on another part of the Fire Truck’s unique features.

As well as the truck, there are 2 additional vehicles. These are both stored on the truck and can be detached to help fight fires in unique ways. On the roof of the truck is an aerial drone. This LEGO City FD-branded flying device features 4 blades and 1×2 shaft brick, which allows a pair of stud shooters to be attached to it.

In addition to the aerial drone, in the middle of the truck is a flip-down door which reveals a land drone. This is also branded in the standard fire rescue colours including the great new vibrant yellow, which I love as a colour and is perfect for the emergency services sets. The land drone as features a 1×2 shaft brick, to which a robotic arm can be attached.

If you read my review of the Emergency Vehicles HQ set, it mentioned the ability to switch attachable accessories to each of the vehicles and the same process is featured here. As well as both of the drones having shaft brick connectors so does the Fire Truck and all three of the vehicles can swap their attachable accessories, which also include a rope winch. It’s a fun feature but as with the Emergency Vehicles HQ, I would have liked a few extra accessories, at least you can mix and match them across the 2 drones and the truck.

There are 3 minifigures included in the set and I have to say they are all quite good. They include a standard firefighter, which uses the new vibrant yellow helmet introduced last year. She’s joined by another firefighter in a completely different uniform. This firefighter is kitted out in a metallic silver outfit, including a unique torso. I really like this minifigure as it’s something different. Finally, the line-up is completed with a utility worker. This rugged chap has a new face print, which pairs nicely with the ponytailed construction helmet.

Overall

This is another of the LEGO City sets I wouldn’t normally have any interest in but thanks to reviewing it I’m glad I got to build it as it’s a great set. I loved the build and all aspects of the set offer something interesting. I also like that it offers something new for the often ‘samey’ LEGO City fire sets. The interchangeable accessories are a nice idea, if there were more of them featured in the set it would have made the feature even more fun.
