43248: Inside Out 2 Mood Cube Set Review

I don’t know if it’s just me but when I think of Disney sets, those based on Pixar films aren’t the first thing that comes to mind. Yet, there are a surprising amount of LEGO® sets inspired by Pixar’s characters. The latest is based on Pixar’s upcoming sequel, Inside Out 2. The original film was released in 2015 and followed the story of Riley, who moved to a new city and had to deal with all her new emotions. Much of the story featured Riley’s five core emotions, Fear, Anger, Joy, Disgust and Sadness. They return in Inside Out 2 along with a few new emotions all of whom feature in the unusual new set. Here’s a closer look at the Inside Out 2 Mood Cube.

Inside Out is filled with unusual-looking characters. Each of the Emotions featured in the film has a unique appearance. Something not suited for the style of minifigures, mini-dolls or even BrickHeadz. The set finds a good balance between figures and brick-built images to represent the film’s characters. You begin by building a stand section. This is a becomes base for the mood cubes. A v-shaped groove runs the length of the base, which allows the cubes to nearly slot in place. The stand also doubles as a basic recreation of the emotions control desk. A selection of different coloured 1×1 round tiles represent the various emotions. This part of the build is also home to the set’s four characters. These include Joy and Anxiety along with side characters Margie and Foreman.

It’s fair to say that Mini-dolls aren’t as beloved as minifigures. But the use of one in this set perfectly replicates the characters of Joy. She’s joined by a new emotion called Anxiety. This uses one of the micro-doll bodies and a unique new element for the head. Margie and Foreman are simple characters. They both use standard minifigure heads. Foreman is just a body-less head. Margie is slightly bigger and has a round body. They both wear bright yellow hard hats.

The main aspect of the set is a pair of cubes. They are built with space in the centre of them to store stuff. Admittedly, this is rather unnecessary as there aren’t any purposely spare elements to store in them. Both cubes are decorated with pixel-art recreations of the film’s Emotions. The design of the characters is similar to those in the 100 Years of Disney Animation set, released last year. Characters featured on the cubes included Joy, Anger, Disgust, Sadness and Fear. These original Emotions are the new ones, Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy and Ennui, which I’ve never heard of before but is a feeling of weariness or boredom. Most of the characters are easily identified despite the limited detail. Embarrassment and Ennui are the worst of the bunch. There are three sides of the cubes that don’t feature a character but instead feature a 6×6 tile plate, decorated with stickers.

It’s tricky to place exactly what the set is. Quite a few of the recent Disney Princess sets have featured objects, such as boxes, pencil pots and the like. Others have been simple playsets or displayable builds, the Mood Cubes set sort of blends elements of them all. The Joy mini-doll is amazing, her appearance is perfectly suited for the style of a mini-doll. Due to the other Emotions’ unique looks, the way they have been included in the set is quite clever. All in all it’s a fun and colourful little set, which perfectly portrays the characters and messages of the Inside Out films.
