43229: Ariel’s Treasure Chest Set Review

Next week will see the cinema release of the latest live-action remake of a Disney Classic. The Little Mermaid is a much-loved Disney story which is inspired by the classic Danish fairytale written by Hans Christian Andersen. One of the key elements of the tale is Ariel’s obsession with the world beyond the sea. So she collects various whozits, whatzits and gizmos. Where best is it to keep all those things than in a treasure chest? Which is the inspiration behind this upcoming LEGO® Disney set. Here’s a closer look at Ariel’s Treasure Chest.

As mentioned above this is inspired by the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid and like the last couple of reviews, although they are Disney sets, they aren’t part of the Disney 100 collection. The set is basically a fancy chest-shaped jewellery box, with various places to store things. However, it’s not that roomy so there is a limit to what can be placed inside. Similar to the old fashion musical jewellery boxes, there’s a turnable platform inside the box. This is tuned by placing the key-shaped brick separator into the ‘lock’ on the outside of the chest. This merely turns the platform and doesn’t lock the chest or provide any automation or music.

The exterior of the chest is quite simplistic in terms of the build, but much of the detail is found on the lid. This features a few ornate gold elements and a sprinkling of little stickers. More stickers are also applied to the inside section of the lid, on a couple of new-style flat plates. What the chest’s base lacks in detail on the outside is more than made up for inside. The exterior is inspired by the seabed and the hidden cove Ariel uses to hide her land treasures. Again it’s not overly detailed but is quite colourful, especially against the backdrop of fish-themed stickers inside the lid.

The base section is also home to two pull-out draws, which are found on either side of the chest. These are small and can’t hold much but you can get pop a few of the tiles used on the other part of this set. After it was announced that the LEGO DOTS theme was coming to an end, the same announcement also suggested the products would live on in other sets. This is evident in this set as it features a DOTS bracelet. It can be decorated with various tiles, unfortunately, this is use plain coloured pieces, with no funky printed ones.

An Ariel mini-doll is included in the set and can be built into two different styles. Firstly by using her mermaid tail or this can be swapped for a ‘diamond’ dress, which has been used in other Disney Princess sets. The base part of this dress element can also double as an umbrella. Ariel is joined by Flounder, making this the second and cheapest way to get this particular creature figure and ‘Sebastian’ who is just a crab element. It’s a fun little set, which young fans of the film will enjoy, especially as it features the film’s three main characters. the only downside is the set’s pricing is a little high, especially for what the overall set has to offer. It should have also featured a few more DOTS tiles as the selection included is very limited and offers minimal creative choices.
