40703: Micro NINJAGO City Hands-on

Earlier this year, a new series of collectable LEGO® sets was revealed, inspired by the popular NINJAGO City range. The Micro NINJAGO City Collection will include mini versions of the four previously released NINJAGO City sets. The first of them is now available as an Insiders reward, where it costs 2700 points. Here’s a brief look at the new set.

Back in 2017, one of the many sets to be released alongside The LEGO NINJAGO Movie what at the time was the largest NINJAGO set, 70620: NINJAGO City. The set would best be described as a NINJAGO modular and proved so popular an additional set was released the following year. A couple of years later, when the NINJAGO movie theme was a distance memory, a third and fourth set were added under the Legacy banner. All of the NINJAGO City sets are highly detailed so shrinking them to a microscale doesn’t seem like an easy task.

Considering there’s been such a drastic shift in scale, the micro version of NINJAGO City does an impressive job of capturing quite a lot of the details of the modular building. Plenty of the features found on the larger set have been included such as the advertising boards around the mid-tier walkway, a lone piece of sushi on the roof and the fish displays on the side of the building.

It’s a wonderful little set but it does carry a hefty ‘price tag’ at 2700 Insider points. Meaning to get all four of the sets in the planned series you’ll need to fork out almost 11,000 points plus place an order so you can redeem each of the sets. I wish the changes to the LEGO loyalty program were a lot more meaningful. The points cost for some of the physical items is high but there should be a system in place to simply ‘order’ the free item after redeeming points. Similar to My Nintendo, where you can redeem points for a free item and just pay a postal cost. At the very least there should be the ability to use multiple redeemed rewards on a single order. Regardless of how you get these sets, once all four are connected, they are going to look quite cool, especially if the other three sets are as good as this one.

The Micro NINJAGO City set is available exclusively as a LEGO Insiders rewards. Availability may in some regions and the reward is limited to one per Insiders account.
