40385: LEGO Iconic Trophy Review

Despite there be many fun little trophy elements, there has never been a buildable trinket to celebrate key moments in life. However that will change in 2020 as the LEGO® Iconic Trophy will be released and you’ll soon be able to celebrate everything with a LEGO Trophy. I’ve been set the set early to take a look at. This fun little set joins the Iconic Birthday Cake, which I reviewed yesterday. So let’s see how set 40385: LEGO Trophy shapes up.

The Build

The LEGO Trophy is a 200 piece build, which results in a classic looking trophy. This includes a plinth base, topped with a yellow coloured cup. To get the rounded look of the trophy, much of it is made up of plate cladding. It’s actually a fun little build and despite the small points of connection on the steam of the cup and the two wing arms, it’s surprisingly sturdy. It stands at just over 14cm high so it is a decent size to have on a shelf or desk, without taking up much room.

One of the key components of the LEGO Trophy is the ability to customise it with a collection of 2×2 and 2×4 tiles. This is the sets most fun, but also frustrating aspects. The 2×2 tile can be mounted on the front of the cup, with the larger 2×4 tile mounted on the base of the trophy. There 12 of the 2×2 tiles, with features various icons, such as sporting equipment, rewards and even a Minifigure face. With 8 of the 2×4 tiles, which are a little more detailed with various slogans on them, these range from Well Done to Best Mom Ever. These can all be mixed and matched to get the message for the celebration you wish to commemorate.

Unfortunately these are all achieved with stickers. I would have much rather preferred printed pieces, purely because nature of customisation will mean the elements are going to be handled a lot and the stickers may wear. I would gladly pay a little extra to have printed tiles. However there are many wonderful LEGO customisers out there who may create a pack of printed tiles, which could also include additional icons and slogans.

Overall

A buildable trophy is a cool idea and one I can see being used to celebrate all sorts of things, both connected to LEGO and beyond. The build is fun and the finished set looks cool. I like that you can customise it to be relevant to different celebrations, but the use of stickers to achieve this is a little disappointing. The LEGO Trophy will be available in LEGO Stores and LEGO.com from early January.

  1. Why “mom”, why not “mother”? There’s a world outside North America!

Are these stickers or printed tiles. From your images they look like the former?

It’s a neat idea. It would’ve been more creative if Lego had just published instructions given their rebuild the world campaign!
