As I continue to take a look at the new 2020 LEGO® Creator 3-in-1 sets, today it’s the turn of the cool looking set 31103: Rocket Truck. As the themes name suggests, the set can be rebuilt into one of three different creations, all of which use the same selection of elements. As well as being able to build the lead model of the Rocket Truck, you can also choose to build an Off-Roader vehicle and a Quad Bike. So let’s take a look at all three of the builds from LEGO Creator 3-in-1 set 31103.

The Builds
Lead Model – Rocket Truck
The lead model is an interesting looking rocket-powered truck. Despite seeming a simple looking vehicle, it has an interesting build. The whole vehicle is built upon a 2×14 plate, but it’s the way the shell of the truck is built on it which is a little different. The wheel axles are all built independently to each other and the rest of the truck is built in sections. This allows for an interesting overall shape of the truck. I quite like the light green and white colour scheme, which is lifted even more by a couple of darker green pieces. Including my favourite element – the NEXO shield.
Although it’s a fairly large vehicle, there is room to place a Minifigure inside the truck. Although it may look a little swamped by the rest of set. One of this builds best features is the engine section at the front of the truck. This ties nicely into the rocket exhaust at the rear of the vehicle. Although the blue pins used to hold the flames in place look a little out of place. The only bit which looks a little strange is towards the front of the truck. The wing pieces don’t fully join up to the bumper section, which leads to a small gap. It’s not that I don’t like it, it’s just a little unusual for the LEGO build system.
Model 2 – Off-Roader
Taking apart the Rocket Truck and using most of the same elements allows you to build an Off-Roader vehicle. Unusually for me, I like this just as much as the lead model. The overall look of the Off-Roader isn’t much different from the truck. Obviously it loses the rocket elements, along with the engine. The front of the Off-Roader, using the roof section from lead model, with a couple of curved plates, to create a really nice looking front to the vehicle. Again there is space for a Minifigure, should you wish to add one.
Model 3 – Quad Bike
The final model, which can be built with the same elements as the other two sets, is a Quad Bike. This uses the least amount of elements compared to the other two builds. Despite the fewer elements, the Quad is still rather bulky. The build is rather fun, and the end result looks nice, apart from the steering bar. The handles used just don’t look right compared to the rest of the build.
Overall
As mentioned in previous Creator 3-in-1 set reviews, if a set offers multiple builds, I very rarely choose to build the alternate models. By reviewing this set, I have chosen to try out the additional models and in the case of this particular set, I like them just as much as the lead model. Sure the Rocket Truck is definitely the best of the three but the Off-Roader and Quad Bike feel robust enough to be sets in their own right, instead of cobbled together in order to make use of the elements from the lead model. All in all I enjoyed building this set just as much as seeing the finished build.
