With 2024 seeing the introduction of a sixth LEGO® Advent Calendar and rumours suggesting there won’t be a Marvel-themed Christmas countdown in 2025, it got pondering where LEGO advents could go next. Using mini LEGO builds to countdown the days until December 25th has changed significantly over the past 20 years. In the early days, the LEGO advent was simply a collection of generic builds and a sheet showing how to build them. Since then, they have evolved to offer advent calendars based on LEGO themes with unique daily items hidden behind a numbered door.
Before settling on the ‘evergreen’ LEGO City, Friends and Star Wars-themed advents, the LEGO Group dabbled with various others such as Pirates, Castle, Belville and even Clickits. The modern-day line-up includes LEGO City, LEGO Friends and LEGO Star Wars. In 2019, these were joined by Harry Potter Advent and in 2021, a Marvel Advent Calendar. This year expanded the seasonal countdown with a Disney one.
But where could or should the LEGO Advent Calendar range go next? Here are a few ideas…
LEGO NINJAGO
As much fun as licensed Advent Calendars are, they also command a higher price point compared to the ‘LEGO IP’ ones. It’s no surprise that evergreen themes including City and Friends should continue to inspire future Advent Calendars but what is a surprise is that NINJAGO continues to be overlooked. The theme continues to be immensely popular and it would be fun to see some of the ninja appear in festive outfits.
LEGO Minifigures
It’s also a good day when you open the door of your LEGO Advent Calendar to find a minifigure. They are often special versions, added as an extra bonus. Now a minifigure-themed Advent would be costly, especially if it contained 24 characters. But it could split characters with accessories or animals. Offering a unique collection of minifigures to countdown to Christmas.
LEGO Minecraft
Minecraft is set for a big year in 2025, with a feature film, Netflix series and theme park rides. LEGO Minecraft continues to sell well, even after all this time and the little builds found on the LEGO Minecraft magazine proves similar things could be offered in an Advent Calendar. It would also be fun to some of the Minecraft characters and objects with a festive twist.
LEGO Classic
Taking inspiration from the early Advent Calendars, a classic one would be filled with generic builds using simple LEGO bricks. These could also be used to create a larger model as well as offering a collection of bricks which can be used beyond the Christmas period.
LEGO Creator 3-in-1
Similar to a Classics Advent Calendar, a Creator one would also offer more generic mini-builds, maybe even smaller versions of previous sets. Although the smaller piece counts for each build would make it tricky to offer a 3-in-1 model each day. A trio of days could be combined to craft alternate models.
When considering the offering of this year’s LEGO Advent Calendars, I would retire Harry Potter over Marvel. Disney was a fun idea but minifigures would have been a better option than microdolls. It will be interesting to see how many LEGO Advent Calendars will be released in 2025, as it’s costly to get them all. The ideas above of no indication of any future sets.
