There have been countless LEGO® sets released inspired by major motion pictures and TV shows. But there is one thread which connections many of them – Steven Spielberg. Today sees the release of Disclosure Day, the first new Spielberg film in several years. Making it the perfect time to see how the legendary director has inspired some LEGO sets. The legendary movie director and producer has been connected to numerous iconic movies and shows, meaning he’s indirectly inspired an impressive array of LEGO builds. In fact, Steven Spielberg’s connection to the world of LEGO began a long time ago.

In 2000, the LEGO Studios theme was launched, which focused on the creation of movies. The theme was created to take advantage of the emerging popularity of ‘brick films’, which is the art of crafting stop motion movies using LEGO elements. One of the main sets in the LEGO Studios line was the ‘LEGO & Steven Spielberg MovieMaker Set’, which featured a basic camera and a minifigure dubbed ‘The Director’. This had a passing resemblance to the iconic director. LEGO Studios would also be the first time both Spider-Man and Jurassic Park would be inspired LEGO builds, long before they became themes in their own right.

Since then, many of the films directed by Steven Spielberg or those he has produced have been the inspiration for multiple LEGO sets. The first of Spielberg’s major film franchises to inspire a LEGO theme was Indiana Jones. Hot on the heels of Star Wars, Indiana Jones sets were released alongside Indy’s return to the big screen in the much derided Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Many of the sets released in 2008 were based on moments from the Last Crusade and the Raiders of the Last Ark. With others based on the fourth film. In the same year, a game following the events of the first three Indiana Jones films was released by TT Games. The following year, sets inspired by Temple of Doom were also released, along with a second game focused on Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. LEGO Indiana Jones would return, albeit briefly, in 2023, with sets inspired by the original films.

One of Spielberg’s most iconic film franchises made dinosaurs cool again. Although there were sets featuring prehistoric creatures, including a couple in the LEGO Studios line, we wouldn’t get a dedicated theme inspired by the worlds of Jurassic World & Jurassic Park until 2015. Since then, sets directly based on Spielberg’s original trilogy have appeared, including the large-scale T. rex Rampage set in 2018 and the 30th Anniversary sets released in 2023. The original film continues to inspire new content, including additional films and an animated TV series, all of which have led to new LEGO sets.

LEGO Dimensions really benefitted from Steven Spielberg’s magic touch, with several inspired by films directed or produced by the legendary director. This includes E.T. The Extraterrestrial and Jurassic World, plus the Goonies, Gremlins and Back to the Future.

Long after Dimensions, some of these iconic movies would get their own sets. These have included the LEGO Ideas Jaws set featuring the Orca, and its crew, plus Bruce the Great White Shark. LEGO Ideas would also give us sets inspired by The Goonies and Gremlins, both films produced by Steven Spielberg and Amblin. There have also been different versions of the Time Machine from Back to the Future.

A more recent connection to the legendary director is the Shrek set. DreamWorks was officially set up by Spielberg to rival Disney. Even before that, Steven Spielberg had the rights to the book on which Shrek was based. Shrek then became one of DreamWorks earlier successes.

Another Spielberg classic will inspire an upcoming LEGO Ideas set. A set by fan designer Lafabrick, inspired by E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, was chosen to become a set last year and will see E.T. transformed into a buildable LEGO model.
