The recently released LEGO® Ideas set inspired by The X-Files has proven very popular. Fans of the show have come out in force for the set based on fan builder Brent Waller’s design. One thing people like the most is the fun nods to the iconic show. With over 210 episodes, across 11 seasons and 2 features, there are plenty of moments ripe for the Easter Egg treatment. Here’s a look at some of them found in The X-Files set.
‘The Lone Brickmen’
When Mulder wants something looking into, he often visits his fellow conspiracy nuts, The Lone Gunmen. Named after the shooter of JFK, the Lone Gunmen are honoured in the set on a stickered newsletter. Known here as The Lone Brickmen, their latest scoop uncovers the mysteries of the frogs.
Chinga – Pencils in the Ceiling
At the end of Season 5’s tenth episode, Mulder and Scully reunited after spending the episode apart. In the episode, penned by horror legend Stephen King, while Scully is tracking down a creepy killer doll, Mulder has been keeping busy, mostly by lodging pencils in the ceiling of his office. This is referenced with a small section that slots in the bottom of the woodland part of the build and sits above Mulder’s desk.
Purity – Black Oil
During the episode Piper Maru, a French salvage ship is in search of a sunken squadron of US aircraft. Amongst the wreckage was a downed UFO where an alien virus known as ‘black oil’ lay dormant. After being reawakened, outbreaks were featured in several episodes of The X-Files. The Black Oil is featured as a puddle in Mulder’s office. Its infectious abilities are also shown on Krycek’s minifigure, a nod to his infection from the alien liquid.
Green Blood
Many of the Aliens and Alien/Human Hybrids featured in The X-Files have a toxic green blood. It’s often the only way to discover who is real and who is not. Spots of the Extra-Terrestrial blood have been dropped in the woods on the set.
Sunflower Seeds
In several episodes of The X-Files, Mulder is often munching on sunflower seeds. As well as a 1×1 tile featuring the seeds on Mulder’s desk, packets of seeds can be found in some of the cupboards dotted around the office.
Frogs
Frogs have famously been used in LEGO sets in several interesting ways. One was ‘piloting’ the T. rex in a Jurassic Park set, and they have been used as buds in Botanicals sets. They also appear in several episodes of The X-Files. So the inclusion of frogs in this set is almost a dual Easter egg. But I like to think they reference The Simpsons episode, The Springfield Files, where a trio of frogs croak the name of a famous beer before being swallowed by an alligator.
I Want To Believe
Mulder’s chaotic office is full of nods to various episodes of The X-Files, but one poster is particularly iconic. Plastered on Mulder’s wall is a poster featuring a classic UFO and the words ‘I Want To Believe’
The Flukeman
During the second season of The X-Files, Mulder investigates strange deaths where people are dragged underwater by a mysterious monster. That monster would turn out to be the human/flatworm hybrid known as The Flukeman. The monster soon became one of The X-Files most iconic ‘monsters of the week ‘; in this set it appears as one of the 8 minifigures.
Greys
Mulder and Scully’s investigation led to all manner of weird and wonderful episodes. But the main thread connecting The X-Files would be the existence of aliens. Known as ‘Greys’, the Extra-Terrestrials in The X-Files featured in many memorable episodes. Here, one of them is recreated as a unique minifigure.
Bees
If it wasn’t bad enough that monsters were causing havoc and aliens were very real, the shady group known as The Syndicate were secretly trying to experiment on the population. One such example was the use of bees to spread a virus. Printed tiles feature a bee that can be found a few times in the set.
The Best of the Rest
Mulder’s has many Easter Eggs; some of the others include a LEGO take on the FBI’s crest, Neil Armstrong’s moment of the Moon, the Face on Mars, and a crop circle. Mulder’s desk also features an X-File file, the hard copy evidence of an unexplained case. A map of Antarctica references the location of a buried alien craft.
The new LEGO Ideas set is filled with fun nods to The X-Files universe. Many iconic moments from the show are dotted about the build. Some more obvious than others.
