LEGO Set V Source: Star Wars Skeleton Crew

It’s not very often a new Star Wars ship is important enough to inspire a LEGO® set. Nor have we seen one revealed so far in advance of the material which has inspired it. But that is the case with the Onyx Cinder, which features in the latest Star Wars Disney+ series, Skeleton Crew. This new Star Wars story blends classic 80s Amblin-type adventures with the galaxy far, far away, think Goonies in space. The latest episode hits Disney+ today making it the perfect time to see how the LEGO set compared with the series. It’s time for another LEGO Set V Source.

Deep within the forests of At Attin, lays dormant what is believed to be a Jedi Temple or it could just be a sewage sub-station filled with poison gas. Either way, it’s where the adventures of Wim, Neel, KB and Fern first begin. After gaining access to the mysterious tomb, it soon becomes apparent it’s not a place where Jedi sought council with the Force nor was it the source of zombifying gas. It was in fact an old freighter ship used by pirates and it was soon setting sail for adventure with an unexpecting new crew.

So far we’ve had limited views of the exterior of the ship, which is called the Onyx Cinder. But from the brief glimpses, the LEGO version appears very faithful to it. Unlike most other Star Wars ships, it lacks the same symmetry which offers a different build experience. It’s also not just a mass of light grey bricks. The Onyx Cinder hull is broken up with flashes of white and brick-yellow pieces, both adding to the ship’s ramshackle appearance.

Access to the interior is limited but you can flip down a couple of panels on the sides of the ship and the back drops down to reveal some boxes of cargo. As with many LEGO versions of Star Wars ships, it’s scaled down quite a bit which makes the inside area limited in space. So it’s only expected that access to it is the same. It also allows a fun play feature to be added. On top of the Onyx Cinder is a switch that can rotate four thrusters found on the front and back of the ship. Flipping causes the thrusters to change from facing forward to pointing up, helping the ship to land.

Any good ship needs a crew and although they might not like it, the kids from At Attin are soon dubbed the Skeleton Crew. The set features all four of the main cast along with a mysterious Force-sensitive adult. LEGO fans are keen collector minifigures and this set offers some good ones and they compare favourably to the characters from the show.

Characters include Fern, a headstrong girl who would rather hoverbike race than learn at school. KB is an intelligent youngster with cybernetic implants. Wim is a boy who daydreams of adventure and is memorized by tales of the Old Republic. The best of the bunch is Neel, a young, easily swayed kid who is part of the Elephantine class of species. All four characters are perfectly captured in minifigure form, especially Neel, who uses a new element to replicate his unique alien appearance. They are joined by a character called Jod Na Nawood.

The kid-centric story of Skeleton Crew is perfectly suited for the world of LEGO. It’s nice to see most of the main characters are included in the set although, Thirty-Three is a notable omission. The Onyx Cinder is available now and you can stream Star Wars: Skeleton Crew on Disney+ now.
