Minecraft is an interesting LEGO® theme. It began life as a LEGO CUUSOO set, the forebearer of LEGO Ideas, in 2012 and became a standalone theme the following year. Now, 13 years on, Minecraft has been a regular theme inspiring countless playsets, a monthly magazine and even a 2025 LEGO Advent Calendar. It’s also inspired another title from DK Books, with their Visual Dictionary series taking an extensive look at the sets, minifigures and buildable characters which form the popular LEGO Minecraft range. The book also includes another exclusive LEGO minifigure. Here’s an early look at what the LEGO Minecraft Visual Dictionary has to offer, ahead of the book’s release next week.

DK Books’ Visual Dictionary books have been used for several LEGO themes, showcasing all aspects of them, from minifigures to sets and everything in between. The LEGO Minecraft Visual Dictionary is split into six chapters, each themed around different areas of the Minecraft universe. Each page is filled with content, including plenty of images and interesting facts. You’ll also find yellow boxes on some pages which offer ‘Brick Facts’, these detail snippets of information about how or when elements were created and other LEGO facts. Visual Dictionary books are brilliant at collating things together, so pages are often filled with variants of the same characters or creatures.
One of my favourite things to find in a LEGO book is some ‘behind-the-scenes’ content. I was delighted to discover that the book has plenty to offer, thanks to chats with the LEGO Minecraft Design Team and game developers at Mojang. Both discuss how the partnership began, how the sets are created and how they choose to recreate moments from the game in physical LEGO sets. There’s also some great imagery in the behind-the-scenes section, including sketch models of the LEGO Minecraft Advent Calendar and concept art showing how Minecraft minifigures could have looked if their design more closely resembled standard minifigures.
In 2022, Minecraft expanded the selection of default skins. Joining OG Steve and Alex were a gang of new faces which players could choose as their in-game avatar. One of those newer default skins was Makena. In this book, the character is making their LEGO minifigure debut. The exclusive minifigure has been created specifically for the book. It’s not as exciting as some of the exclusive characters included with other books, but at least it’s something unique. Plus, it further expands the line-up of default skins represented in minifigure form.
It’s amazing to think that the LEGO Minecraft has been in existence for 13 years and continues to be a popular theme. Largely due to how much care and attention is dedicated to bringing the popular game’s ever-expanding world to life in brick form. The LEGO Minecraft sets include many unique elements and printed pieces, which makes the book an interesting read for both Minecraft and general LEGO fans.
