Continuing the post-Christmas tradition of gifting various Marvel characters with their mech suits, two new sets join the line-up in early 2025. Several Marvel heroes and villains have donned mechanised versions of their outfits. With some characters getting multiple mech outings. Beloved by younger LEGO® fans, the sets offer plenty of play opportunities; for older fans, they are often the source of some interesting minifigures. As the final series of Marvel Animation’s What If…? show, Marvel characters with mechanised suits aren’t far-fetched. The first mech-based sets from the 2025 LEGO Marvel range include an Iron Man mech and a Spider-Man mech, both characters have previously been featured in similar sets.
Over the past few years, several similar-sized mechs inspired by characters from both the Marvel and Star Wars universes have been released. Despite the two different characters, the build of both sets is fairly similar. Each mech armour is built around two unique pieces – a bucket-like waist and a chest plate. Together these form the body of the mech armour. There are variations found on each set including a unique printed element but the base build of the body – a flip-down chest plate along with the arms and legs are all very similar. Each mech can also hold a minifigure, which forms the head of the mech.

The Iron Man Mech Suit acts as an extension to the character’s minifigure, so the colouring matches it as best as it can. Both the arms and legs use the angled plates as their base. Iron Man’s use of tech is shown by differing arms, one is a normal style with a hand the other features twin stud shooters.
Iron Man has got to hold the record for the amount of times it’s been represented as a minifigure. As this is not an MCU set the suit isn’t directly inspired by a particular suit but it is similar to the Mark III thanks to the gold-coloured arms and circular Arc Reactor. In comparison, Ultron is quite a rare character. The rogue AI has only inspired a couple of minifigures. This version is similar to Ultron Prime but the print detail features a lot more silver and the eyes similar to the jagged slits, features on early MCU Ultron minifigures. It also has the chin plate previously used for the character.

Spider-Man has donned many different suits, but unlike Iron Man, the version in this set doesn’t represent the companion minifigure. Instead, the suit has a similar appearance to that of the Spider-Man from Insomniac’s PlayStation games. This Spider-Man has white detailing and a white spider logo, both of which can be found on the mech. There’s also some webbing, with a seemingly wonky canopy of web but this is to allow it to be wrapped around a minifigure. It can be joined together as well, making it a fun play feature.
Similar to Iron Man, Spidey has multiple minifigure versions but there are far more generic versions. Telling them apart is tricky but the one here is fairly similar to Spider-Man’s classic suits. It does feature print detail on the arms but the red print is partly darkened due to being placed on the blue surface. It’s a shame that the Spider-Man minifigure isn’t also inspired by the game version of the character as the mech seems to be. Anti-Venom makes its minifigure debut in this set. The character features a negative colouring compared to the usual version of Venom. So this minifigure is mostly white, with the spider-like pattern on the torso being black. It’s nice to get unique characters like Anti-Venom and sets like this are the perfect vessel for them.
