Back in 2021, the LEGO Group revealed plans to develop a prototype LEGO® brick made from recycled plastic. This was the latest step in its journey to make LEGO products from sustainable materials. However, the plan to develop LEGO bricks from plastic bottles has now been abandoned according to the Financial Times (alternative access to a similar report can be found here). This is due to the process of turning used plastic bottles into LEGO elements causing larger amounts of carbon emissions. Although this path to sustainability has ended for now, the LEGO Group has already created a number of elements from plant-based plastics, reduced packaging sizes and slowly started to shift from single-use bags in LEGO sets.

The problem with PET is that it’s not as durable as ABS. So, I should imagine the processes used to create a product as rigid as ABS would take an inordinate amount of chemical processes. Thus, making the use of discarded plastic bottles almost impossible to be sustainable,
