As part of today’s annual results announcement, the LEGO Group has been speaking to members of the press. The Guadian spoke with LEGO Group CEO Niels B Christiansen. During their discussion, it was mentioned that the LEGO Group was “increasing investment in online play including building its own development team”. This suggests that the future of LEGO® Games could be vastly different to what has previously been seen. In the past, TT Games were the sole creators of LEGO titles, such as LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Harry Potter and LEGO City Undercover. This changed a few years ago to open up development opportunities with other studios, which resulted in a LEGO Speed Champions expansion for Xbox Studios’ Forza Horizon. LEGO 2K Drive and LEGO Fortnite.
It’s rumoured that TT Games is still working on a future LEGO title, but they haven’t released a game since 2022 after previously releasing multiple LEGO games annually. The partnership with Epic Games for Fortnite appears to be a long-running endeavour, but the partnership with 2K appears to be over, as the rumoured football game has never seen the light of day. Oddly, the LEGO Group already had an in-house developer with Light Brick Studios, but it became independent soon after the release of their sole game, LEGO Builders Journey. With the cost of game development skyrocketing, the days of vast LEGO games could be over in favour of smaller experiences similar to LEGO Horizon Adventures.
