As we near the start of a new year, the 2025 LEGO® rumour mill is cranking up. Some of the rumours currently doing the rounds suggest we are in for another exciting new and possibly returning LEGO set. Here’s a round-up of some of the speculative LEGO builds on the way in 2025. Remember, these are merely rumours and remain speculation until officially revealed by the LEGO Group or their partners.
How To Train Your Dragon
The Rumour – A LEGO Icons set of dragon Toothless from Dreamworks’ How to Train Your Dragon.
The Possibility – Based on a series of books, How to Train Your Dragon has been turned into several animated films and various Netflix series. In 2025, a live-action remake of the first film will be released. Rumours suggest Toothless the Night Fury dragon could be transformed into an Icons set. It would be a displayable piece and not a playset with minifigures. It would also be a one-off set instead of a new theme.
One Piece
The Rumour – Sets based on Netflix’s One Piece series
The Possibility – Many LEGO rumours begin life as a list of set numbers. One group of upcoming sets is rumoured to be based on a Netflix series. It’s suggested that the series is the live-action version of the popular Japanese manga, One Piece. Netflix’s take on One Piece has fared better than most other live-action versions of iconic manga or anime stories. A second series of One Piece is due in 2025, making a theme based on the series perfectly timed. It’s only a unique way to bring back pirate-themed sets.
Bluey
The Rumour – A new theme made up of 4+ & DUPLO sets based on Bluey.
The Possibility – Bluey is a massively successful Australian animated show about a family of dogs. It’s backed by BBC Studios and Disney giving it a global reach. A recent post by the Bluey social media channels featured what seemed to be a LEGO brick-built ‘Long Dog’ and the promise of some surprises in 2025. A list of 4+ and DUPLO set numbers is also tied to a currently unknown new theme. As mentioned the cartoon is massively successful and will be getting a feature film in the future. The family-friendly show’s target audience aligns with the younger-focused set types. The art style of the show could be replicated in a similar way to the Unikitty sets.
Lords of the Rings
The Rumour – A third Icons set inspired by Lord of the Ring’s location Bilbo Baggins’ Hobbiton home, Bag End.
The Possibility – Lord of the Rings was a much-loved but short-lived theme introduced in 2010. The LEGO Group returned to Middle-Earth via the Icons theme with the amazing Rivendell set. This was followed up with Barad-Dür in 2024. Rumours suggest another Lord of the Rings set will be released in 2025 inspired by Bilbo Baggins’ cosy home. Both of the recent Icons sets caused a lot of excitement so it’s only natural that the LEGO Group would continue to create showpiece sets each year. Bag End is a wonderful location with ties to both the LOTR trilogy and the Hobbit films.
The Simpsons
The Rumour – The Krusty Burger restaurant from The Simpsons
The Possibility – We first saw sets inspired by The Simpsons in 2014. They included two large-scale buildings, a minifigure series and a BrickHeadz set. Now seven years since the last Simpsons set, we could be getting another. The Krusty Burger restaurant could be the third building from Springfield to become a LEGO set. Much like the Lord of the Rings theme, The Simpsons is beloved by LEGO fans. Now the show is part of the Disney family, and a new generation is discovering it. The success of reintroducing the Lord of the Rings shows there is a market for bringing back licensed themes. Plus, if all the areas of Springfield, Krusty Burger is probably the best suited for a LEGO set.
Pirates of the Caribbean
The Rumour – A large set based on the Pirates of the Caribbean films.
The Possibility – Despite there being no new Pirates of the Caribbean films, LEGO fans still look fondly upon this long retired Disney subtheme. One of the most engaging aspects of the POTC sets was the ships, which is where this next rumour lands. A rumoured future set could offer a highly detailed new LEGO take on an iconic vessel from the films, most likely The Black Pearl. Disney and the LEGO Group have a really strong relationship. Plus LEGO fans enjoy pirate-related sets. That combination could lead to this being another ‘no-brainer’ rumour.
Star Trek
The Rumour – A LEGO Icons set of the Enterprise from the Star Trek films/TV series.
The Possibility – Star Trek has a massive fan base and a long-running history which almost rivals that of Star Wars. Paramount Pictures hasn’t partnered with the LEGO Group much, favouring other construction brick companies. However, there is a suggestion that 2025 will see the USS Enterprise recreation with LEGO bricks. There have been brick-built Star Trek models before now and they were officially licensed to a company called BlueBrixx. They will no longer have the licence in 2025 leaving the LEGO Group to possibly take it on. It could feature multiple crew members to represent different eras of the show or merely be a displayable ship. If true the set will most likely be released under the Icons banner.
Book Nooks
The Rumour – A new Subtheme of book-inspired sets called Book Nooks.
The Possibility – This rumour is an interesting one as it’s believed to cover different themes. But the concept is a book-shaped scene based on popular books turned films such as the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. The Lord of the Rings set is rumoured to feature Gandalf and the Balrog. The LEGO Group have featured books in several past sets and one which can be nearly displayed in a bookcase is ideal. If true, expect there to be plenty of controversy as there have been multiple Ideas projects based on a similar concept, although it’s worth noting book nooks have been a thing long before now.
