Earlier this year, the LEGO® City range introduced a series of sets featuring themed cart-like vehicles commonly known as soapbox racers. In the real world, soapbox carts are motorless homemade vehicles, and in recent times, they have been made popular due to Red Bull’s Soapbox Derby events. It appears the citizens of LEGO City have been inspired by those Red Bull events, as the LEGO City carts are all themed. There are three sets available, with two smaller packs featuring two carts and a larger set also featuring two carts and a ramp to launch them from. They were joined by a unique LEGO store’s Make & Take build. Here’s a look at all of these fun little sets.
Pizza vs. Fire Truck Race Cars
This twin pack of themed race cars included a mini fire engine and a pizza-shaped racer. Both have connections to other LEGO City sets, along with some of the previous city-themed ranges. The fire engine racer is styled similarly to the modern-day firefighters. The chef in charge of the pizza car looks similar to their counterparts from classic 90s sets, such as set 6530: Pizza To Go. Airplane vs. Hospital Bed Race Cars
The second twin pack includes a retro bi-plane racer and an awesome hospital bed. The plane pilot is similar to the Series 3 CMF pilot. The bed is driven by a patient, complete with an arm cast and head bandage. Found in set 60459: Airplane vs. Hospital Bed Race Car Pack
Hot Dog vs. Toilet Race Cars
The largest of the Soapbox Race Car sets includes a large ramp to launch racers from including the two themed racers featured in the set. They include another food-related racer, which is inspired by a hot dog. This is paired with a drivable toilet. What else would a plumber drive? Found in set 60460: No Limits: Race Car Ramp.
Burger Race Car
In January 2025, selected LEGO stores ran an in-store Make & Take event, where a burger-themed soapbox. Find the instructions for the Burger Race Car Make & Take below and source parts from BrickLink.
Should you wish to create your own soapbox race cars, the unique chassis and wheels can now be ordered on the LEGO Pick-A-Brick service. Although it may work out cheaper to purchase the smaller twin packs, where you’ll get two chassis and 8 wheels.
