Robotic companions have become a mainstay of the LEGO® Star Wars theme, but the latest buildable LEGO droid doesn’t hail from a galaxy far, far away. Instead, it comes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel’s first family have been the subject of several films, but it wasn’t until last year’s MCU debut that the Fantastic Four’s robot assistant, H.E.R.B.I.E., was faithfully portrayed on the big screen. Built by Mr Fantastic, the Humanoid Experimental Robot B-Type Integrated Electronics may look quite retro, but the robotic assistant is an important part of the Fantastic Four team. H.E.R.B.I.E. is now the subject of the second LEGO Marvel set inspired by Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Ahead of its release next month, here’s an early look at the upcoming set.

Marvel sets have been offering something beyond playsets for a few years now. Admittedly, these sets have been a little hit and miss, but buildable figures have been quite prevalent. The latest has more in common with Star Wars than Marvel. With the first MCU film featuring the Fantastic Four set in an alternate universe, the retro-futuristic aesthetics give the film’s technology a unique look. That’s certainly the case for H.E.R.B.I.E., which also makes for an interesting set.
The Build
Although H.E.R.B.I.E. has a fairly boxy shape to its body, it still has a few unique angles. These are achieved by cladding and an internal shell with different plate sections. At first, they appear quite loose, but once other sections are added, they are fixed in place more securely. With the interior being mostly empty, you can pop off the front plate on the front of H.E.R.B.I.E.’s body to find a space to store the cup and screwdriver accessories. But the best part of the set is H.E.R.B.I.E.’s head. This features a simple gear system which causes the printed eye discs to rotate when H.E.R.B.I.E.’s head is turned. Despite being a robot, the head and arms really make H.E.R.B.I.E. so expressive.
LEGO fans often delight in the interesting use of parts in LEGO builds, and this set has a couple. H.E.R.B.I.E.’s base is a recoloured shell previously used for Sonic’s speed sphere. There’s also an odd pan-like element used for the bottom of the set’s coffee cup accessory. But my favourite is the use of Battle Droid bodies for the hands. There’s finally another use for this ageing element. I should also mention the lack of stickers. Instead, the graphics on H.E.R.B.I.E.’s tape reel eyes and his branding on the body are all printed. The rest of the details on H.E.R.B.I.E. are achieved with the clever use of elements, such as the stacks of studs and 1×1 plates around the base of the set.
The Verdict
I’ve made my love of the MCU clear many times, but that love doesn’t automatically give LEGO sets inspired by it a free pass. In fact, some of the recent Marvel sets haven’t delivered or have been awfully priced. Thankfully, that is not the case here. H.E.R.B.I.E. is a delightful set, one that’s fun to build, has great features and a decent price point. It’s a shame it didn’t release alongside the film, as it’s a far better set than the Galactus one. But it’s certainly one of my favourite sets of 2026 and just edges the Iron Man and his Awesome Friends set as this year’s best LEGO Marvel release. It’s definitely worth picking up this wonderful set. The Fantastic Four – H.E.R.B.I.E. set launches on August 1st and can be pre-ordered now.
