July 4th seems like a fitting day to take a look at the recently released LEGO® Marvel set inspired by the upcoming Phase 6 opener, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The introduction of Marvel’s first family has long been anticipated since Disney regained the rights following the purchase of 20th Century Studios. Not only does the film begin a new phase of the MCU, but it also ushers in an important new era for Marvel Studios’ epic interconnected worlds. The companion LEGO set is based around the Construction Figures concept, using the buildable characters scale to partly replicate Galactus’s epic size. Here’s what the LEGO Marvel Fantastic Four Vs. The Fantastic Four have been a key part of Marvel history. Introduced during the Silver Age of comic books, the Fantastic Four comprises Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm. They were introduced before some of Marvel’s most popular characters, including Spider-Man, Thor and the X-Men. After a trip to space goes wrong, the four return to Earth, who powers and become known as Mr Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch and The Thing. Despite their importance to the world of Marvel, they haven’t featured in a LEGO set before now. Although they did feature in the LEGO Marvel games.
The Construction Figure format has been used since 2022 and began as a way to offer larger-scale action figure-style takes on popular Marvel characters. It’s also been used to provide super-sized versions of characters so that they tower over minifigures. As seen in the Civil War Battle set with Ant-Man and with the Sentinel in the X-Mansion set. Here, it is used to show the planet-eating Galactus looms over the Fantastic Four minifigures. It doesn’t capture the true scope of Galactus’ gigantic stature.
Although it uses the same basic core as previous Construction Figures, it is far more detailed. From the brief glimpses we’ve had of Galactus from the film’s trailers, it appears his LEGO counterpart is a little more colourful. Maybe taking inspiration from the comics as well as the film. Some of the details featured on Galactus are achieved with stickers, but thankfully, the face area is a printed piece. It also features several points upon which you can connect the set’s minifigures. This includes a transparent rod which can be added to the back of Galactus.
As you’d expect, the set includes all four members of The Fantastic Four. They are good but not great representations of the characters. They are a little disappointing. All four characters use the same legs and torsos. Apart from The Thing, the character’s head and hair are fairly generic. The characters could have offered so much more. The Thing should have been a BigFig. Johnny should have been in his flame form. Sue could have been partly invisible using transparent pieces and, shockingly, Mr Fantastic doesn’t feature the ‘long arm’ element previously used for Miss Marvel, Elastigirl and will soon feature in the One Piece sets. Hopefully, any future representations of the characters will fare better.
It’s a fun but expensive set, let down by the very basic minifigures. Of course, adding more minifigures or a bigger Galactus would have resulted in an even more expensive set. At the very least, it finally offers the Fantastic Four in minifigure form. The LEGO Marvel set, The Fantastic Four Vs.
