Although it appears Jurassic World: Rebirth will introduce several new dinosaur species, there will be plenty of old favourites making a return. This set features the much-loved and deadly Raptor, which is joined by an infant Aquilops. But it’s not just dinosaur features in the set, it also includes a Jurassic-themed vehicle and a rather exciting bush. No, I’m not being sarcastic; the bush in this set offers a fun play feature. Raptors have appeared in several past Jurassic World but the latest, which is featured in the set, ditches the old moulds in place of a new, smaller one. Previous Raptors were crafted from several elements. The new version is much smaller and doesn’t have any moving limbs. It’s similar in appearance to many of the bipedal dinosaurs found in the Jurassic World: Dominion sets. It certainly looks a little sleeker, but I prefer the older style. The second dinosaur found in the set is a new species called an Aquilops. It appears this could be a domesticated dinosaur, as it’s named Dolores and is the subject of another upcoming set. This is a single element, and how it compares to the creature in the film remains to be seen, but it’s another cool-looking animal figure. As mentioned, the set features a bush and one of the set’s best elements. This is no ordinary bush, it includes a working mechanism which parts the bushes and allows the Raptor to menacingly emerge. It’s a glorious play feature and so much fun to activate. Assumingly it’s officially described as a ‘surprise push-scare effect’.
The Jurassic World sets are almost as well-known for their vehicles as they are for the dinosaurs. The set features a rugged-looking InGen 4×4. This continues with the colour scheme often used for Jurassic attraction facility vehicles. I really like the configuration of the vehicle and how different coloured elements have been combined with stickers to add detail to the set. It has various accessories such as a radio, syringe injector, and what appears to be a dino tracker device, plus what is described as a piece of liquorice for Dorales.
The set features two minifigures, which appear to be a father and daughter duo. It’s a little unfair to compare them to something which hasn’t been released yet. But the adult of the minifigures, Reuben, looks more like a tanned Ted Lasso than what the character appears to look like from the trailers. Isabella does fair little better, her unique shirt is similar to what she is shown wearing in the trailers, and I like the hair piece used. It’s a recoloured version of Nova’s hair from the Friends sets, appearing in black for the first time. Their colourful outfits are at odds with what those who are normally around dinosaurs would wear, so I’m guessing they get mixed up in the mayhem along the way.
Overall, the set will be overshadowed by some of the others on the way. But it’s worth noting that the set features two unique minifigures and two great dinosaur figures. The 4×4 vehicle is nice and chunky, making it perfect for playing with. But for me, the star of the set is the bush. It could have been a little more dense with foliage, but I just love how the ‘jump scare’ aspect of it works. The Raptor Off-Road Escape set arrives on June 1st.
