Despite being the fastest hedgehog alive, Sonic jumped behind the wheel of several vehicles in his 34-year history. One of the most famous of the vehicles is the Speedster. The sleek blue race car has appeared in several forms across different games and makes a return for Sonic’s latest racer. This isn’t the first time Sonic’s Speedster has appeared in LEGO® form. An early take on the car was featured in the Sonic-themed LEGO Dimensions Level Pack. The latest version is inspired by the Speedster Lightning car, which Sonic drives in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. Here’s what the smaller of the two new LEGO Sonic sets has to offer.

The Speedster Lightning is the successor to a similar-looking car called the Speed Star. For CrossWorlds, it’s the car featured on all the game’s artwork. It’s similar in size and build to a LEGO City car, but to give it a more Sonic twist, it uses various curved elements to give it some interesting details. Just to make it clear that the car belongs to Sonic, it is mostly blue, with flashes of white and red, which are used for the car’s wheel hubs. Beneath the black panel on the car’s bonnet is a sneaky Chaos Emerald, which is a fun nod to the wider Sonic universe. To add to the set’s playability, a trio of golden rings is included in the set, but they don’t really add much. I’d have preferred an item box.
It’s hard to provide a unique variant of Sonic, the character has a unique look used across multiple games. But the one featured in this set is technically unique. The head includes a tooth grin, which was previously paired with a winking expression. Here, both eyes are open. Apart from this slight difference, the rest of the minifigure is the same as others found in previous sets.
It may not seem as if this is a very exciting set, and yes, it’s just a car and a minifigure. But it’s nice to see a licensed set at a lower price point. Beyond the recruitment bags (polybags), all of the previous Sonic sets have been offered at higher price points. This set is neatly positioned as a ‘pocket money’ purchase. The giant sets and elaborate display models are impressive and all, but they alienate younger LEGO fans. The Sonic: Speedster Lightning set joins the Silver’s Car vs. Knuckles Monster Truck set, which both launch on January 1st and can be pre-ordered today.
