Despite recently celebrating its 30th anniversary, the world of Sonic doesn’t have the same spread of games as Nintendo’s Mario series. Sonic the Hedgehog has mostly stayed within the realms of his platforming adventures and occasional racers. But that hasn’t stopped the Blue Blur from speeding into other media. Sonic and friends have starred in several animated adventures, including Sonic Prime. The fan favourite Netflix series greatly expanded the Sonic universe, bringing some obscure characters into canon. Sonic Prime acts as inspiration for this upcoming new LEGO® Sonic the Hedgehog set, which features Knuckles facing off against Dr Robotnik’s Egg Crusher Mech

Dr Robotik’s vast arsenal of egg-themed machines has been the main inspiration for several LEGO Sonic sets. But this is the first set to take inspiration from Eggman’s animated machines. Despite not coming from the games, the Egg Crusher is still in keeping with Eggman’s other creations. The egg-themed mech appeared in the first episode of Sonic Prime, where Eggman uses it to nab the Paradox Prism.
The Sonic sets have already featured a couple of mech-like builds, but this one is a little more streamlined thanks to debuting in animation. A sign of a good mech is stability, and the Egg Crusher crushes it on that front. It may not have masses of articulation, but it can still be posed in some great positions, thanks to the interesting way the legs have been crafted. The central core of the mech is also nice and chunky, not to mention egg-like. I love the way the mech’s armour has been partly created with a pair of car bonnets; these help to give it a unique appearance. Robotnik can be placed inside the mech by flipping up the large disc-like cockpit canopy. This part of the mech and the exhaust pipes along its back are where the mech matches up with the on-screen version. The rest of the mech feels a little more inspired by it, instead of replicating it.
Knuckles is powerful enough thanks to his spike fists, but even a magical echidna can use some help at times. So Knuckles can take on the mech with his themed hoverboard, complete with a fist-like detailing. The set also features a rock-flinging catapult. This can propel a couple of rock elements. These are made a little more stable thanks to a small stack of elements connecting each half of the rocks.
The set includes a Knuckles minifigure along with Dr Robotnik. Both have previously featured in other sets. It’s tricky to offer much in terms of variants of the Sonic characters. However, they enhance the playability and complement the buildable elements of the set.
Sonic’s fandom expanded far beyond the games. Whilst it’s unlikely we’ll get a set inspired by the meme-worthy wonky Sonic ice cream lolly, it’s fun to see a set inspired by the wider Sonic canon. The Egg Crusher is a great choice, and the way it’s been created with LEGO bricks results in another impressive Sonic set. The catapult and multiple stud firing cannon offer fun play features, and the minifigures, although very similar to those in other sets, complement the set nicely. Set 77005: Knuckles vs. Dr. Eggman Egg Crusher Mech will be released on August 1st.
