Ever since the huge water-dwelling Mosasaurus first appeared in Jurassic World, LEGO fans have been keen to see it appear in a LEGO set. It’s taken a new era of films and a slightly different format compared to other LEGO dinosaurs for the Mosasaurus to make its LEGO debut. Jurassic World: Rebirth takes place five years after the events of Jurassic World: Dominion and animated companion shows, Camp Crustaceous and Chaos Theory. Despite being a new story, it continues with the notion that dinosaurs are now part of the Earth’s ecosystem, and they also hold the key to advances in medical science. As the trailer for Rebirth shows, the Mosasaurus are swimming around freely and don’t take kindly to visitors. This new LEGO Jurassic World set is inspired by the moments briefly seen in the film’s trailers. Here’s an early look Brick-built Mosasaurus Boat Mission set.

As alluded to in the intro, LEGO fans have been keen to see several dinosaur species added to the collection of LEGO dinosaur figures. One of the most requested is the Mosasaurus. Although this set features of them, it’s brick-built instead of being a unique creature figure, similar to most other LEGO dinosaurs. Despite the differing formats, the Brick-built dino maintains a similar aesthetic to the figures but does so through part use and printed pieces.
The bonus of the Mosasaurus being brick-built is the ability to make it more flexible. The body is built in small sections, which are clipped together. Thanks to all of the parts of the dinosaur being pieced together or connected by ball joints, you can move almost every part of the creature. The layering a elements along with the body of the Mosasaurus does a good job of replicating the creature’s scaly skin.
As a water-based dinosaur, the Mosasaurus is joined by a small boat. This is featured in the trailer for the film and appears to be a similar-looking vessel, albeit much smaller. It has a similar style to other Jurassic vehicles. Despite being a small boat, it has several fun details, such as the sonar screen and a yellow crate stored on the deck of the boat. Plus various accessories, including a dart gun and magnifying glass, although I’m not sure how useful that would be at sea.
Along with the Mosasaurus and boat, the other buildable elements include two rocky mounts. They can be used to display both of the other parts of the set however, there are no obvious connection points. So they may seem a little pointless, but they add a slight amount of extra playability to the set.
It’s fair to say, beyond sets based on the original Jurassic Park films, most of the minifigures found in the Jurassic World sets are quite generic. This set features two characters who appear to be part of the mercenary team sent to the InGen research site. LeClerc and Atwater are briefly shown in the trailer, and the minifigures seem to be basic representations of the characters. I would say the flesh tone print on Atwater’s legs is an improvement on past minifigures. It probably helps that it’s layered on top of a more natural colour, but it’s not at all washed out.
It’s great that we’ve finally been given a Mosasaurus in a Jurassic World set, but there will certainly be a discussion about how it’s been provided. As it’s brick-built, it looks at odds with the other dinosaurs found in various Jurassic sets. However, as it’s brick-built, the set is more fun to build. I do prefer the figure style dinosaurs and animals, but I get why the Mosasaurus is brick-built, and I think the choice to do so was the best way to go.
