The Quinjet played a key role in the earlier days of the MCU. These unique VTOL crafts helped the Avengers in their heroic endeavours and even assisted the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. It seems the New Avengers will continue to use Quinjets, as a new one is set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday. This will be the 8th play-scale version of the ship, and amazingly, it introduces yet another unique design. The set also features four minifigures. Here’s a closer look at the LEGO® Marvel Avengers: Doomsday Quinjet.

The Build
Quinjets have a fairly recognisable appearance, and despite each of the LEGO versions being different, they all include the dipped wings. These are set back a little further along the fuselage of the craft, which also helps to enforce the Quinjet’s unique appearance. The wings also include the New Avengers version of the ‘A’ logo, which is a sticker. It appears these have been designed to suggest they are bolted-on plates. However, the grey colour of the sticker is vastly different to the elements they are applied to, and this makes them look rather cheap.
The Quinjet includes several features and some surprising omissions. The long sloping front canopy can be lifted to access the cockpit. The set’s imagery shows Cyclops piloting the craft. You can also access the back section of the Quinjet by lifting the top roof panel. There’s enough roof to place a couple of minifigures, including Captain America, with wings. Several stickers are used to add era detail to the interior of the craft. The only play feature is a pair of stud shooters found on the front of the Quinjet. One thing the Quinjet doesn’t include is any sort of landing apparatus. Past versions have featured wheels or flip-down landing gear.
The Minifigures
The set features four minifigures; these include new versions of both Sam Wilson’s Captain America and the X-Men’s Cyclops. Both Sam and Scott have appeared in other sets. Captain America uses the same torso and legs from the Brave New World set. But drops the flight cap in favour of hair and includes a new pair of wings. These nearly fold behind Cap, allowing him to be seated in the Quinjet without removing the wings. Cyclops is similar to versions found in the most recent X-Men sets, but the torso design is a little more detailed, and the legs lack the yellow ‘underpants’ in favour of straps. Although it uses the same hair piece, a lighter brown version is used here.
The MCU’s version of The Thing makes his second LEGO appearance. Similar to Johnny Storm’s second appearance in a set, The Thing ditches his Fantastic 4 suit in favour of a shirtless look. It still uses the gloves accessories and a rocky textured cap. It looks OK, but the character would be better represented by a BigFig. Rounding off the set’s minifigures is Doctor Doom; this is the same minifigures featured in all of the play-scale sets. It’s a great minifigure, with plenty of detail; I especially like the shiny print used on the head. But considering Doom has been shown wearing different variants of his outfit, it’s a shame his minifigure doesn’t offer a little more variety.
The Verdict
Similar to the New Avengers Tower set, this is another aspect of the Marvel universe which has inspired several past sets. A ship such as the Quinjet does offer a certain level of playability, which is why it’s been overly used in LEGO sets. It’s possible Avengers: Doomsday will feature other ships such as the ones owned by the Fantastic 4 or the X-Men. These could have offered something a little more unique than another Quinjet. But it’s difficult to use that as a criticism without seeing how or even if the Quinjet will appear in Doomsday. It would have been better to see the ship used in a more display-focused ‘Epic Moments Collection’ set. Which could have still included the same level of play features. Compared to previous versions of the ships, it is certainly one of the better takes on it. The Minifigures may not be as appealing as those found in other Doomsday sets, but they are popular characters at least. The Avengers: Doomsday Quinjet set is available now.
