Along with the two play sets inspired by the latest Spider-Man film, there’s also a buildable figure dubbed a ‘hero’ figure. It may seem similar to some of the other Construction Figures, but it’s almost twice the size, which I assume is why it carries the hero tag. But does bigger mean better? Spoiler alert, not exactly. Here’s a look at the last of the Spider-Man: Brand New Day sets.

Buildable figures are not a new concept for Spider-Man; the webbed wonder and some of his associates have previously been the inspiration for buildable figures. But those have been a lot smaller in scale than this set. Despite the larger size of the figure, it’s built similarly. One of the main differences here is more points of articulation.
As the set’s product images, box and instructions cover show, the Spider-Man Hero Figure can be displayed in all manner of poses. In practice, getting Spider-Man to just stand up can be tricky. Yes, it has more points of articulation, but it’s not easy to recreate some of those poses. After several attempts to recreate the pose shown in the front of the box, this is the best I could manage. It’s extremely frustrating, and I can see kids being even more annoyed at random elements popping off left, right and centre. The main issue appears to be the feet; they have to accommodate a lot of weight, and the ball-jointed ankles don’t appear to be up to the task. One thing I will say is that the ability to twist the torso plays a key part in being able to achieve some poses, especially the ‘hero landing’ one, like this.
Most of the webbed details on Spider-Man’s suit are stickers, but the set also includes a couple of printed elements, including the Spider symbols on the front and back of the suits, plus the eyes and the webbed pieces on the mask. You can also fix a line of webbing from either of the hands.
As we’ve seen with the new minifigure version of Spider-Man in all three of the Brand New Day sets, his new ‘street level’ suit includes lighter blue patches. Oddly, these are completely absent on the buildable figure. Admittedly, they wouldn’t be the easiest thing to implement without the use of stickers. But several stickers are used elsewhere on the figure, so it does seem odd not to include them on the new suits’ only unique feature.
The set also features a small buildable stand used to display a Spider-Man minifigure, which is the same version featured in all of the Brand New Day sets. It’s similar to previous MCU Spider-Man suits in terms of its colouring of red and darker blue, but as mentioned, it also includes brighter blue panels on the front and back of the torso. The minifigure is mounted on a display peg and includes webbing. It’s finished with a printed tile featuring the LEGO Marvel logo. It would have been nice if it had also included the Brand New Day Spider-Man logo as well, to tie it more to the upcoming film.
I understand we’ve already had a couple of smaller-sized construction figures of Spider-Man, and another would be overkill. But this larger scale doesn’t work for me. For all of the joints used to give it so much movement, it’s extremely difficult to pose the figure without it falling over or parts of it falling off. Despite that, it at least looks like Spider-Man, and if you can get it into a satisfactory pose, it would look nice on the shelf. You can make up your own mind, as the LEGO Marvel Spider-Man Hero Figure will be available now.
