Every iteration of Batman can be identified by its tone, Batsuits and bat-themed vehicles, commonly known as the Batmobile. These unique sets of wheels are probably the most varied of Batman’s arsenal of equipment – something which is strikingly obvious with the new LEGO® Batman Legendary Batmobile Collection. The upcoming sets form part of the 20th anniversary of the LEGO Batman theme and directly link to the upcoming LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight videogame. There are three different Batmobiles from three different films. The most traditional of the Batmobiles is the one featured in the 1997 film, Batman & Robin. As my reviews of the other two Batmobiles will show, in recent years, Batman’s vehicles have become less cartoonish and more like military vehicles. So, of the three vehicles featured in the Legendary Batmobile Collection, this one is the most unique. It is partly inspired by the design of the Tim Burton-era Batmobile. So it features a long, low and sleek design which leans into the symbolism of the bat and the 1989 version of the vehicle. This results in a totally impractical set of fins which jute out of the rear of the car.
The best part of the set is its long bonnet. It’s built to give the vehicle a curved appearance. If you pop off the panel on the bonnet, underneath, you’ll find a special 20th anniversary printed 2×2 round tile. There is one of these found in all of the new Batman sets. Although much of the car’s detail is achieved with elements, it does feature several stickers. These are found on the hubcaps and around the front section of the car. The ‘real’ car features an internal glow which is visible through a clear bat logo and vents along the side panels. The stickers aren’t a great representation of this, but it is the only way of showing it, thanks to the scale of the car.
As the first LEGO set to be inspired by the Batman & Robin film, it offers the first ‘Clooney’ Batman minifigure. The film may not be Batman’s best outing, but it did offer a unique Batsuit. The largely black suit is decorated with large patches of silver, giving it an almost armour-like appearance. This is even featured on the new style bat cowl. This features the white eyes built into the cowl instead of the white band printed on the minifigure head. The minifigure does a great job of capturing the uniqueness of the ‘Bat-Clooney’ suit.
The set includes the ability to unlock content for the LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight game. Scanning the instruction booklet’s QR code will give you the steps you need to take to unlock a golden version of the Batman & Robin Batmobile in-game. The game is released on May 29th.
The set feels more like a Speed Champions-type build than, say, a LEGO City vehicle. It’s a detailed build which helps capture the unique shape and features of the Batman & Robin Batmobile. The Batman minifigure also offers something different. Although the stickers look a little cartoonish, the effects from the film would be extremely difficult to replicate. I hope the Legendary Batmobile Collection gets further sets, but with this and the other upcoming sets, it finally sees just about every version of the Batmobile appearing in LEGO form. The LEGO Batman Legendary Batmobile Collection launches on March 1st.
