For over 85 years, the Caped Crusader has become a symbol feared by the Gotham criminal underworld, but this year marks a different milestone for Batman. It’s 20 years since the first LEGO® Batman sets were released as part of the DC Super Heroes range. During those 20 years, LEGO Batman has appeared in many sets, got his own magazine, starred in several video games and even hit the big screen. Whether he’s dancing the Batusi, rubbing another man’s rhubarb or being the hero Gotham City deserves, there has remained one constant – the Bat Symbol. Despite his many different guises, the Bat Symbol has been an enduring part of Batman’s character. It’s appeared on Batmobiles, Batsuits, Batarangs and even the night skies of Gotham. Which is why the Bat Symbol is an ideal way to celebrate 20 years of LEGO Batman. Here’s an early look at the upcoming LEGO Batman Logo set.

When it comes to branding, no other superhero can beat Batman. Similar to other DC characters, the Bat Symbol has also been adopted as the franchise logo. It’s changed a little over the years, but it’s basically always been the silhouette of a bat in flight, and it’s almost always black. LEGO builds which are a singular colour aren’t the most exciting things to build. Thankfully, that’s not the case here; although the main part of the set is black, the surface is decorated with various black objects connected to the Batman universe. The term greebling is often associated with Star Wars sets and is a method of making a single coloured surface a little more exciting. As you piece together the panels which become the Bat Symbol, you find little nods to Batman’s gadgets, companions and foes. These include Batarangs, grapple guns, Catwoman’s whip and the Penguin’s top hat, to name but a few.
Right in the centre of the logo is a vault door; opening it reveals a standard Batman minifigure. This uses the new style rubber cape and a generic Batsuit, which is similar to some of those features in the early LEGO Batman sets. But that’s not the only minifigure to feature in the set. It also includes a very special golden Batman minifigure. This matches the design of the standard Batman minifigure but is entirely gold. It also features the 20 Years of LEGO Batman logo, printed on the back. This can be perched on the set’s stand.
There are two ways you can display the Batman Logo. It can be mounted on a display stand. This method lets you simply slot it on the stand and can easily be removed. The other display option allows it to be hung on the wall. This uses the Technic mount elements, which have been used in other wall-mountable builds. The addition of a pair of rubber connectors ensures the logo sits neatly against the surface of a wall.
As well as celebrating 20 years since the introduction of LEGO Batman sets, the Batman Logo also has a connection to the upcoming LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight game. The instructions booklet includes a QR code that lets you access digital instructions and claim Insider points, and you’ll also gain access to the Golden Batman minifigure to use in the game.
Of the recent spat of buildable logos, this is probably the most interesting. The build isn’t as in-depth as the Marvel or Star Wars ones were. But the textured surface is a fun way to make the mass of black more exciting. Most of the Easter Eggs are fairly easy to decipher, but it would have been nice if they were highlighted in the instructions as you build the set. The only bad point of the set is the price. It feels a little too expensive for what it offers. At least it offers a unique minifigure and the bonus of digital content for the game.
