The LEGO® Marvel theme has been in a peculiar place these last few years. Despite a steady stream of new content such as Daredevil, Fantastic 4, Thunderbolts* and animated shows like Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man, the LEGO Marvel sets have mostly focused on the wider Marvel universe but mostly past endeavours. Whilst this has provided some interesting builds, it’s also continued to dwell on moments from the Infinity Saga. Earlier this year, a set inspired by the iconic ‘portals’ scene in Endgame was the inspiration for a new Marvel diorama, and now a smaller companion piece has been released. Here’s a closer look at the Avengers: Endgame Thor vs. Chitauri set.

The set comprises several different elements, which include a small piece of scenery, two Chitauri jet scooters, a mech suit and a Chitauri Gorilla. The first thing you build is the mech suit. This is similar in scale to previous Marvel mechs, but not an exact, colour-swapped match. The Iron Patriot and War Machine suits have always been a little bulkier than Stark’s kit. This is shown in the mech suit, which has bigger legs and four weapons. These include four stud-shooters, with two mounted on the mech’s shoulders and two on the arms. As with other mechs, you can flip down the chest plate to reveal an area to seat the minifigure, which then becomes the mech’s head.
The Chitauri forces have plenty of different creatures in their arsenal, including a larger beast-like brute dubbed a Chitauri Gorilla. As the name suggests, the creature is gorilla-like in appearance, with larger forearms and smaller hind legs giving it the same stance as a gorilla. As it’s a Chitauri, it uses a mix of grey and gold elements. The Chitauri Gorilla has a unique head, which is created from a printed sloped brick and a small gear.
The jet scooters are basic builds but do a decent job of replicating the Chitauri’s flying crafts. Both include two stud shooters. The other buildable part of the set is a small piece of scenery. This is what connects the set to the larger Endgame Final Battle set. It features a small orange portal ring and an area to mount the Thor minifigure. It’s only a small section, but it’s great for displaying Thor and Stormbreaker.
You wait several years for a new Iron Patriot minifigure, and we get two in the same year. Amazingly, the one found in this set isn’t the same as the one from the Hall of Armour set. It matches the suit Rhody wears during the final battle scenes in Endgame. It doesn’t include any of the extra guns or replustor lights due to the mech suit. Thor recently got a slight redesign, which swapped out the old style material cape for the new moulded one, which I prefer. As Thor welds a different weapon in Endgame, his usual hammer is replaced with the Stormbreaker axe. Rocket is an unusual minifigure; one minute he’s grey, then the next he’s brown. This one is brown and features a unique torso. I much prefer the versions of Rocket with the collar section, as it makes his unique head look less odd. The Chitauri minifigures are all the same apart from their weapons. The same versions have appeared in several past sets.
In essence, this is a somewhat elaborate Marvel ‘Battle Pack’ and despite the number of minifigures it contains, their line-up is a little lacklustre. It’s great to add Thor to the scene as he was missing from set 76323, but similar versions have appeared in several other sets. It’s also nice to get another version of War Machine, which pairs well in the mech suit, and although Rocket is unique, I’ve never really been a fan of his minifigure. The Chitauri are all the same, which is to be expected, but a member of Thanos’ Black Order would have been nice in one or two of their places. It’s also overpriced, although it contains several minifigures; the other buildable parts of the set are quite compact. If you then consider this an add-on for the larger Endgame Battle set, the combined price for both is even higher. It’s not all negative, Thor’s axe weapon is fun, and the Chitauri Gorilla is interesting and a first for a LEGO set.
