For years, Justin Hammer had looked on with envy at Stark Industries. Thanks to Tony Stark’s genius, his advancements in robotics and AI, not to mention being Iron Man, it was no surprise that someone would come for his crown. During Iron Man 2, with a little help from Ivan Vanko aka Whiplash, Hammer Industries created a battalion of Hammer Drones. These remote-controlled suits of armour soon cause chaos before Iron Man and War Machine take them on. It’s that moment from Iron Man 2 which inspires the smallest of the upcoming LEGO® Marvel sets. In Iron Man 2, the Hammer Drones are based on Stark’s Iron Man suits. But they beefed up and turned into remote-controlled drones, making them a little more imposing than Stark’s suits. So it makes sense they are brick-built, although in doing so, they do look a little less ‘Iron Man-like’. Both drones are built similarly and have a basic level of articulation. The legs are far more flexible compared to the arms. Their main difference is the colour schemes of each Hammer Drone and their different weaponry. I like the sand green and sand blue used for each drone. The green drone has a shoulder-mounted bolt blaster, and the blue one has two flick missiles. Apart from that, the set lacks any other play features.
Both minifigures are extremely similar to versions found in other sets. The Iron Man MK6 suit has featured in numerous sets, with this exact version being featured in the Marvel logo and the most recent Hall of Armour set. The only difference is the inclusion of two transparent pegs and transparent red rods to represent Iron Man’s slicing laser blasts.
War Machine is also similar to the one found in the huge Avengers Tower set. But now has lighter hands, technically making the torso unique. It also sports an improved shoulder-mounted gun, which has become a stud shooter.
It’s an interesting little set, but that’s also the set’s main issue: it’s a little set with a high price point. Sure, it contains two minifigures, but even with the two buildable drones, it doesn’t feel like it should carry a price point of £17.99/$22.99/19.99€. All themes should offer smaller sets, but they should be priced accordingly. At the very least, it’s a slightly cheaper way to gain access to the two minifigure, which have previously been in much more expensive sets.
