There’s a running theme with the upcoming LEGO Marvel sets. They are all seeing various Marvel heroes and villains facing off against each other. This is also the second of the new sets to feature a car along with not being inspired by the MCU. This time it’s the turn of Spider-Man antagonist Venom who is taking on Spider-Man and Spider-Women. Here’s what the Spider-Man vs. Venom Muscle Car has to offer.

There’s been a few past sets featuring a character-themed car including those inspired by Spider-Man, Miles Morales and Iron Man, but this set’s vehicle is a little less fantastical. It’s mostly black with white trimmings, giving it a more muted appearance. It does have a couple of flourishes including Venom’s chest logo on the bonnet of the car, this is a printed piece. There are also two black Symbiote trails reaching from the back of the car and a pair of stud shooters mounted to the sides of the vehicle. I suppose the transparent red windscreen could be considered unusual but it is not as odd as a car with a gold and red livery or one covered in webbing. Popping off said window gives you access to the interior, which features enough room to seat a minifigure and store some stolen gold.
Along with the car, the set also includes a small green safe. This small boxy build is chained to the car and features a stack of gold bricks. I like that it’s similar to other LEGO versions of a safe. Even if it’s small size limits any sort of locking ability.
The set features three minifigures including title characters, Venom and Spider-Man. The Symbiote creature Venom has appeared in several sets and this version is the same as the one first introduced in 2019. It’s a similar story with Spider-Man, this version first appeared in 2021. Although it has print detail on the arms, it lacks the same on the legs. The blank lets are an ongoing and disappointing plague of the Marvel sets. Thankfully, the set’s third character redeems it somewhat. Like Spider-Man, there have been multiple variants of his female counterpart, Spider-Women. The version included here matches that of Julie Carpenter’s Spider-Women. This saw the spider suit change from red and yellow to black and white. So this isn’t a venomized take on the character. Thanks to the inclusion of hair, the minifigure has two faces. Although Spider-Woman has blank legs, at least they are dual-moulded.
Superhero/villain vehicles are an odd concept but equally, they make for cool little playsets. Unlike some previous Marvel cars, this one is the most normal. Swap out the bonnet and remove the black tentacle trails and you have a car not too dissimilar to a classic 1970s American muscle car. The characters included are loosely linked to their appearance in Sony’s Madame Web and third Venom films. I can see why Spider-Man is included but it would have been much better for it to at least be a variant of the character, especially considering the set isn’t linked to a particular film or series. I’d go as far as to say Spider-Woman should have been the lead character as Spider-Man feels like the third wheel here. The set will be released on January 1st and can now be pre-ordered from selected retailers.
