75688: Glinda’s Wedding Day Set Review

As they are released way ahead of the films which inspire them, LEGO® sets have a long history of revealing story points from major films. That’s certainly the case with this set. As its name suggests, the set appears to be inspired by Glinda’s wedding day. This appears to be a deviation from the musical. But to be fair, the set it’s also alluded to in the upcoming film’s trailer. Continuing the reviews of the newly released LEGO Wicked sets, here’s a closer look at Glinda’s Wedding Day.

As mentioned, the scene this set is based on is briefly featured in the Wicked: For Good trailer. Glinda’s wedding to Fiyero appears to either expand upon or change plot points from the musical. But from the fleeting appearance in the trailer, it seems to suggest the set is quite faithful to the film. Glinda’s wedding gown is revealed from behind a flurry of yellow butterflies. Here they are represented by two large brick-built creatures, which are mounted on stalks so they can be positioned in different ways.

The scene appears to be set in Emerald City as it features similar colours and architecture. Which is one of the best things about the Wicked sets. The focus of the scene is a set of steps leading to a doorway, but much of the detail is found on the two sections which sit on either side of the doorway. These can be extended out to make them a little more accessible, but because the butterflies are so large, some of these details get lost behind them. The side sections feature some colourful trees, seating areas and a tasty-looking cake.

You’ll notice that the back of the set appears to have random ball joint connectors. I assumed they were there to connect the set to another in the range. However, it appears they are there for a far less exciting reason. They simply serve as buffers to stop the two side platforms from opening out too wide, with the two exposed 2×2 round plates butting up to them.

The set includes two mini-dolls, both of which are exclusive to this set. Glinda is featured in her wedding dress, which replaces the standard mini-dolls’ legs or skirts, for a full gown. The same elements have been used for some of the Disney Princess mini-dolls. Due to the inability to provide dual expressions on a mini-doll head, Glinda is provided with two different heads. One showing her as slightly concerned and the other, shocked. There appears to be a running theme with the new sets and Glinda’s over-the-top expressions. Glinda is joined by Madame Morrible, who is also sporting a new variation on the outfit she wore in a previous set. The new version is a little more colourful but still uses the same head and hair as her previous mini-doll incarnation. They are joined by two animal figures, which represent a squirrel and a small bear. Although seemingly random, a stampede of animals is seen briefly in the trailer. I much prefer the classic style LEGO animals, but they’re better suited to the unique design of the mini-dolls.

It’s another interesting Wicked set and one which appears to be based on an important moment in the upcoming sequel. If you’re into collecting mini-dolls, this is another set to include unique variants. The surrounding set includes some fun details, but even though it opens out, some of them are lost behind the large butterflies. Even moving them partly blocks some parts of the set. It’s not as impressive as Elphaba’s equivalent set, but it should still interest younger fans of the film.
