Buildable characters may seem like a recent addition to the LEGO® Star Wars range. However, they have been around since the early days of the long-running theme. Of course, those early attempts offered some pretty crude recreations of iconic characters. Thankfully, more recent attempts have been much better and have introduced a subtheme of sets which began with 75379: R2-D2 and also includes similarly scaled sets inspired by C-3PO and Chewbacca. The latest OG character to join the line-up is the galaxy’s coolest bounty hunter, Boba Fett. Here’s an early look at the upcoming set.

The Build
The build begins with the base; this becomes the anchor of the entire set, with the legs of the figure built into the base. Once in place, various brick yellow elements are layered around the legs to neatly hide the fact that they are fixed into the base. This not only offers a stable base for the rest of the build but also allows it to be posed in a cool manner. Much of the detail used to craft Boba Fett’s appearance is built-brick. His armour is clad with various panels and plates, and these are mostly built with elements. Unfortunately, there are a few stickers used, which is a shame considering the price of the set. Thankfully, the detail on the top of the helmet is printed.
Although most parts of Boba Fett are fixed in place, there is a little articulation in his arms. This allows you to pose them to hold his blaster rifle. You can remove his weapon, but without it, he looks extremely awkward.
Boba Fett famously sports a jetpack, which ultimately leads to his trip into the Pit of Carkoon and the belly of the Sarlacc. Although it uses the same colours as it appears in the film, it feels a little too colourful. In the film, Boba Fett’s overall appearance looks like he’s seen plenty of battles, and that applies to the jetpack, which makes it seem less bright. However, portraying that here is a little tricky. Maybe print detail on some elements could have helped to make the jetpack appear less like it’s box fresh.
Designers often slip fun Easter Eggs into sets, and this includes one in the helmet. Within the front part of Boba’s helmet, you’ll find two seemingly random stacks of 1×1 studs, but these actually represent Boba Fett’s earlier appearances. Before he becomes a lot more colourful, a concept for the character had him wearing a mostly white set of armour. Before appearing in live action, Boba Fett was introduced in an animated short which formed part of the infamous Star Wars: Holiday Special. This featured Fett in a slightly different coloured set of armour. Both these looks inspire those stud stacks.
The Minifigure
The set includes a UCS-style display plaque which also doubles up as a stand for the accompanying minifigure. Unsurprisingly, that minifigure is Boba Fett and is based on the character’s Return of the Jedi appearance. Despite two recent ROTJ sets inspired by a scene famously featuring the character, he’s been oddly left out of them. So it’s nice to finally get a new version of the character, which features a lot of detail on the torso and legs, but it’s the helmet I like the most; this includes battle damage, with the much-loved ‘helmet holes’ being used to hold the new style Rangefinder. Boba is also sporting a jet pack and material cape, making it one of the most detailed versions of the character. It’s worth remembering that this is a minifigure and not a highly detailed recreation of the character.
The Verdict
Some of the recent buildable figures have been quite impressive, and this is one of the better ones. But it feels overpriced for what it offers. It’s a great representation of the character, and it has a great minifigure, but for the price, it shouldn’t include stickers. Especially as the pieces they are used on could easily be printed. Yes, it’s yet another display piece, but it does look quite cool. I’d have liked an option to fix the display plaque to the base of the set. Overall, it’s a good set but maybe one to pick up during a double Insiders Points promotion or once it’s discounted a little.
